Dancers in the Plaza Mayor

A local dance troupe
During my first trip to Salamanca in 2002, they had a stage set up in the Plaza Mayor for part of the time, and they had a lot of performances, concerts, events, etc. This picture shows a dance troupe. They did dances that are from that part of Spain (Castilla y Leon). The dances were cool, and the costumes were beautiful. Sometimes at night, in the Plaza Mayor, groups of local people would play the music for these dances (one guy would play a flute and drum at the same time) and dance.
"Backstage" at a bullfight

Before the bullfight starts...

As we were looking for our section at the bullring before the corrida, we saw this "backstage area" where the guys involved in the bullfight get ready. We didn't see the matadors, but we did see the picadores mounting their horses and some other men getting ready. We also saw some bulls (behind the stone wall), but they weren't the ones used in the corrida.
A tarot reader gives someone a reading

A street "performer"

There were many different types of street artists in Salamanca, and one of them was this tarot reader. He wore silk pajamas, and had new-age music playing. He never talked at all, he only mimed, and whenever he wasn't doing readings he would hold an open parasol in front of himself to show he wasn't busy. Other times, he'd expressively set up his little booth, which included daggers and other Pagan items. He was quite interesting and different from what we usually expect a street artist to be.
The black swan of Salamanca

Swan Lake

In Parque de Alamedilla, there was a pond with lots of birds like ducks, doves, etc. There was also a black swan in the pond. Of all the birds there, the swan was my favorite.
Announcing a market

Hear ye! Hear ye!

Once in the Plaza de Anaya during my first trip, a group of locals in traditional costumes started playing music, doing a local dance, and when they had drawn enough of a crowd, this guy announced the opening of a outdoor market that would be going on for the next few days.
A speech at the University of Salamanca

Inside the university

This was at a speech for the international students before the first day of classes in my second trip to Salamanca. They talked about everything from meeting fellow students to host families, but since the speech was in Spanish, most of us couldn't understand the whole thing and some people fell asleep. The hard wood seats we were sitting on prevented me from having a siesta, but to me the speech was just blablabla dragging on and on... Though the inside of the building is nice, isn't it? :)
