More about Ostia.

by leics - last update: May 15, 2004

Public buildings and private lives.

Dolphin mosiac.
The coloured mosaics have all gone to museums, but the black and white ones remain in situ. I think that's brilliant.
Wall painting.

Wall paintings.

The best wall paintings have gone to museums, but you can still see some on their original walls. I think that's brilliant too.

Going back in time.

As you wander through the streets, houses and back yards of Ostia you get a real sense of going back in time. It's easy to imagine what life was like, and every corner brings a new discovery.
A Roman coffin.
Box tiles for central heating.
Even in Italy the Romans needed their underfloor heating (hypocausts) and flues which channelled warm air through the walls. They certainly would have needed them in England!
Everywhere you can see huge terracotta pots sunk into the ground .....a way of keeping water cool and food fresh.
Terracotta pot.
Courtyard garden.

Courtyard gardens.

The Romans liked their cool courtyards and gardens. This is a particularly nice one, I think .... I liked the ?planters in the middle.
The Imperial Palace is largely closed off at the moment (to make it safe?) but I pushed my way through the long grass to take this picture of the beautiful mosaic in the colonnaded entrance.
Imperial Palace.
Warehouses.
Ostia, as I've already said, is huge. Take your time........discover its secrets.

Oh yes, Ostia is on my wishlist!!! This tilework is exceptional, it also amazed me in the old places in Umbria! But the imagination of black scorpions... eeks...
