| Along the way to Kinabalu Park |
The trail begins... As early as 6.30am, our driver arrived at our hotel and fetched us to the Kinabalu Park. The journey took 2 hours usually but we took more than 2 hours because of the landslide. Just merely after 30 minutes of journey, we drove through a misty and foggy road. We could see the cloud below us now, in the early morning. The driver explained the story about the mountain and his experience of climbing the mountain to us all the way to the park. |
| Mount Kinabalu from Kinabalu Park |
In Park Head Quater...... As we arrived the park head quaters, our tour operator proceed with our registration and obtained permits for us to climb the mountain. Well all got a tag with our name on it! At the same time, he got us a mountain guide. The spectacular view of mountain could be seen on clear day, usually early in the morning, from here. The mountain stands firmly in front of us. We took our breakfast in the park's restaurant and rested for about 30 minutes, but the registration process took more than an hour. |
It all started now..... The driver sent us to Timpohon gate, which is 5km away from park HQ. From here, the trail begun and we were surrounded by rain forest. After about 5 minutes walk down hill, we reached a water fall. The path to the top is constantly up from the waterfall. It really was an exhausting journey for me. |
The "Pondok" There are 7 stops along the way up to Laban Rata rest house. Toilets and untreated water supplies are available in each stop. Every start on each stop, we were hoping for the next stop to come soon. |
The granite mountain can be seen here..... At above 2500m, every single step was heavy. The air is thin up there and I stopped for every 10 - 15 steps I made. It was a really bad experience for me.... At this level, you could see the ecosystem changes, from rain forest to montane trees. The view from above is very nice and the air is cold. I was actually inhaling 100% fresh air from the mountain. |
Never ending path... As it getting higher, the air is colder and thinner. Even a hundred meter journey seemed very far for me. I started to worry if i couldn't make it to the top at this level. If I choose to go down, it was another long way down. My mind was strong but my body was weak..... However, at the end, i choosed to go up! |
We were there finally... After 7 and half hours huffing and puffing, we finally arrived at Laban rata rest house. We were all exhausted!!! However, the view from mountain and the sunset as the rewards of whole day tired.... We were actually live above the clouds now. |
In the mountain hut.... After taking our dinner in Laban Rata resthouse restorant, it was already 7.30pm. We walked for another 15 minutes to our hut in darkness. Without taking bath, i packed my things for next day and jumped into the bed at 8.00pm. The water was so cold up there without heating.... I tried to avoid touching water as I can... We got to wake up the next morning at 2.00am...... Good night for now. |
