Prague metro is...

...is fast, cheap and reliable. It operates from 5 am to 12 pm and with it you can reach all of Prague main attractions. I thought it would be interesting to create a guide which could cover all metro stations and explain what to find around each one. According to your feedback it was a good idea and you find it useful.
First of all I will describe Mustek metro station (the "heart" of the city) and then 3 metro lines with the commentary about all stations.
Information about the tariffs and fares can be found on the website of Prague Public Transport company.

Mustek metro station

The core station of Prague metro, in the middle of the city. The station has 2 levels: green line A is the higher level, yellow line B is the lower level. The connection corridor between them is usually very busy. The B line level has 1 direct exit to Narodni street (via National Theatre, Tesco department store etc.). On the underground level of this exit you can find the Information centre of Prague public transport. The A line level has 2 exits (see the picture):
- via Wenceslas square (Vaclavske namesti): you will be in the middle of the square, on the underground level you will find several small shops (tobacco, bakery, flight tickets agency...) and a supermarket (not the perfect one, but you can find there all basic food and things you need). On the ground level there are mainly hotels, banks and shops (Marks&Spencer, C&A etc.)
- via Mustek: this is the area at the "lower" end of Wenceslas square. There is another small supermarket Albert. You are just next to Na Prikope street with many shops along the street itself or in passages: Bontonland (CD superstore), Benetton, Mango, Kenvelo, H & M, Next, Zara, Jackpot etc. If you are at Mustek and are looking up the square at the National Museum, on your right hand you have the high building with books superstore and Bata shoes (the building from 1929 is interesting from the architectural point of view). At Mustek you are only a few steps from the Old Town: take the street Na Mustku and go straight - passing the Market you will reach Old Town square in 5 minutes. Last note for Mustek: 50 m far from Mustek at Na Mustku street there is an information and tourist agency selling the tickets for all kind of cultural and other events in Prague. The similar agency is also at Na Prikope street.

Line A (green)

Depo Hostivar - nothing special
Skalka - a Tesco superstore about 10 min. walk from the station
Strasnicka - nothing special
Zelivskeho - there is a small bus station used for some of Eurolines connections, hotel Don Giovanni just next to the station and cemeteries area around
Flora - until 2002 quite uninteresting station, in 2003 Flora shopping centre was opened there: cinema IMAX with 3D projections on the big screen, many small brand shops, a food shop and services (laundry etc.) on the underground level, fast food restaurants and cafeteria
Jiriho z Podebrad - good area for being accommodated here as tourist (safe area of Prague 2 + 3, restaurant with reasonable prices, good connection to sightseeing places), interesting modern church by Josip Plecnik built around 1930; it is the nearest station if you want to visit the Prague TV tower (nice views over all city and restaurant)
Namesti Miru - the same character of the area as around Jiriho z Podebrad station, tramways n. 22, 23 going to the centre and also to Prague Castle area
Muzeum - crossing of red line C and green line A. Drugstore in the subway. You are on the "higher" edge of the Venceslas square. There is St. Wenceslas statue and memorial to victims of communism. The station is called Muzeum because the National Museum building which is just above the station. State Opera building and big parking are 200 m away.

Staromestska - Old Town area. Very close to the station are: Charles University buildings, Rudolfinum (concert hall), Museum of Applied Arts, Paneria bakery (fresh sendwiches, cakes etc.). Underground parking. From Staromestska station, you can easily reach the Old Town square, the Jewish quarter, the Charles Bridge.
Malostranska - just opposite to Staromestska station across the river. From there you can go up to the Prague Castle, but much more better is to take from here tramways n. 22 or 23 to Pohorelec stop (you will avoid climbing the hill), look in this area of Strahov and walk "down" to the Castle area. Good starting point for Mala Strana (Lesser Town) quarter, 10 minutes to the Charles Bridge; a very nice garden (Valdstejnska zahrada) just next to the station (after you are out of the station, go left and then right - find a small door to the garden).
Hradcanska - the Prague Castle area can be reached from here (10 minutes).
Dejvicka - bus n. 119 going from Dejvicka station to the Prague airport (journey takes 20-30 minutes)

Line B (yellow)

Cerny most - large shopping and entertainment centre 300 m from the station (all goods shops, in a separate buildings cinema, sport center, IKEA furniture shop); highway connection to the North (Mlada Boleslav, Liberec) and East (Hradec Kralove)
Rajska zahrada - nothing special
Hloubetin - nothing special
Kolbenova - nothing special
Vysocanska - nothing special
Ceskomoravska - there is a big hall (arena) opened in April 2004 for sport and culture events; will probably become a busy station in future - new hotels and business buildings planed in the proximity
Palmovka - nothing special
Invalidovna - nothing special
Krizikova - station in the heart of Karlin quarter: only few minutes from the historical centre but so different! (mixture of old neglected houses and modern business buildings, mixture of original mainly gypsies population and businessmen)
Florenc - crossing of yellow line B and red line C; access to Florenc bus station (main bus station in Prague, connections to bigger Czech towns, some international lines as well - Eurolines company etc.)
Namesti Republiky - on the edge of the Old Town, in the proximity you can find: Municipal house (Obecni dum, art nouveau building), Kotva department store, access to Na Prikope street (see above in the paragraph about Mustek, if you take this street you will reach Mustek area). The big shopping and business center called Palladium is going to be opened in Automn 2007, with direct access from the metro station.
Mustek - see above
Narodni trida - other edge of the Old Town, just next to Tesco department store and fruit and vegetables market (on working days), 400 m from the National Theatre; tramways n. 22, 23 going to the Mala Strana and Prague Castle area
Karlovo namesti - bigger park, the historical townhall of New Town quarter with a tower to climb. Still a good area to be accommodated, not far from the historical center.
Andel - mainly modern business and shopping centres in the proximity (Tesco superstore, cinemas, small brand shops, fast foods...), bus station for buses leaving for South Bohemia (take the exit Na Knizeci for the bus station!), Bertramka (museum of W. A. Mozart) can be reached from Andel (about 500 m far)
Smichovske nadrazi - one of the main train stations (trains leaving for South and West Bohemia)
Radlicka - nothing special
Jinonice - nothing special
Nove Butovice - nothing special
Hurka - this station and next three ones are in the heart of big panel buildings with block of flats - typical example of the "socialist time" architecture. This "heritage" is still very hard to overcome.
Luziny - nothing special
Luka - nothing special
Stodulky - nothing special
Zlicin - 3 big shopping centers in the proximity (mainly clothes shops and cinema + restaurants; on the other side of the highway Tesco food superstore + IKEA furniture store); highway connection to the West (Pilsen)

Line C (red)

Ladvi - nothing special
Kobylisy - nothing special
Nadrazi Holesovice - the second large train station (after Hlavni nadrazi station) - many international trains arrive here; there is the bus going to the Prague ZOO
Vltavska - nothing special
Florenc - crossing of the lines C and B - see above (line B)
Hlavni nadrazi - the main train station in Prague; the park around is usually mentioned as an area to avoid in the night, because of homeless people etc.
Muzeum - crossing of the lines C and A - see above (line A)
I. P. Pavlova - tramways n. 22, 23 going to the centre and also to Prague Castle area
Vysehrad - Prague Congress centre just above the station; main access to Vysehrad park, church and cemetery (nice walk and nice views of Prague!)
Prazskeho povstani - nothing special
Pankrac - area with many new business buildings, Czech television headquarters and buildings are about 800 far from there
Budejovicka - again many new business buildings around, an old shopping center above the station
Kacerov - nothing special
Roztyly - this station and next three ones are in the heart of big panel buildings with block of flats (see the commentary for Hurka station - line B)
Chodov - a big shopping centre (food, small brand shops) just next to the station
Opatov - nothing special
Haje - nothing special, the station is not far from the D1 highway, connecting Prague with Brno, Bratislava etc.
