My Family of Cats

My First Kitten

My First Addiction...Then Comes VT!

Why Own a Cat...

There's a danger you know.
You can't own just one, for the craving will grow.
There's no doubt they're addictive, wherein lies the danger
While living with lots, you'll grow poorer and stranger.

One cat is no trouble, and two are so funny,
The third one is easy; the fourth one's a honey
The fifth is delightful, the sixth one's a breeze.
You find you can live with a houseful, with ease.

So how 'bout another? Would you really dare?
They're really quite easy, but oh Lord, the hair!
With cats on the sofa and cats on the bed,
And crates in the kitchen, it's no bother, you said.

They're really no trouble, their manners are great.
What's just one more cat and one more little crate?
The sofa is hairy, the windows are crusty.
The floor is all footprints, the furniture's dusty.

The housekeeping suffers, but what do you care?
Who minds a few nose-prints and a little more hair?
So let's keep a kitten, you can always find room.
And a little more time for the dust cloth and broom.

There's hardly a limit to the cats you can add
The thought of a cutback, sure makes you feel sad.
Each one is special, so useful, so funny,
The food bill grows larger, you owe the vet money.

Your folks never visit; few friends come to stay,
Except other cat folks, who live the same way.
Your lawn has now died and your shrubs are dead, too.
Your weekends are busy, you're off with your crew.

There's cat food and vitamins, grooming and shots
And litter and toys and more, all which cost lots.
Is it worth it you wonder? Are you caught in a trap?
Then that favorite comes up and climbs in your lap.

His look says you're special and you know that you will
Keep all of the kittens in spite of the bill.
Late evening is awful, you scream and you shout
At the cats on the sofa, who refuse to get out.

The whole thing seems worth it, the cats are your life.
They're charming and funny and offset the strife.
Your lifestyle has changed, things just won't be the same.
Yes, those cats are addictive and so's the cat game!

Eight is NOT Enough!
As long as I can remember, there has always been a cat around. As any cat lover would know, it's very difficult turning your back on a sick cat or a kitten who appears on your door-step and this is how I ended up with my eight. I always say that "this will be the last one" but they just keep coming and I just keep taking them in :-)

MAX

Max is the eldest of my cats. One September day at 2am in 1998 whilst driving home from the airport after a holiday in Lisbon, I spotted a cat who had just been run over by a car so I stopped to check him out. What a sight - there was this absolutely beautiful cat in a state of shock. To me he looked as though he was dying. Unfortunately vet emergency wasn't available in Malta at that time so I picked him up and took him home. In the morning to my amazement I found him wobbling around the bathroom. I took him to the vet and after an operation to have pins put in one of his legs he recovered. Today he is 100% normal and can jump about like any other cat. After failing to find his owner I decided to keep him myself (no complaining :-) He has a beautiful character and is very vain always cleaning his lovely fur. He's a perfect cat and his favourite past-time are sleeping and being spoilt rotten by anyone who falls under his spell!

ALICE

Alice is a tiny and pretty tabby cat. Don't let her sweet looks and size fool you because this cat can GROWL!! She can scare off any cat who gives her trouble even though she is half the size of any other cat I've ever seen. At the time this pic was taken, she was still running around outside and dangerously crossing the street to my house to eat. She was slowly introduced to the other members of my cat family and has now settled down permanently to being a house-cat. All the howls and meows were well worth it in the end because she is absolutely adorable (apart from her growling!). She will brush up your leg and tell you how much she loves you :-)

ELSA

Elsa is one of Alice's kittens. She's very quiet, loves to eat and although she is friendly doesn't like to be picked up and cuddled at all. One day Elsa brought me her four sick kittens to my door-step. I was able to find a home for one but had to keep the other three myself. Elsa visits twice a day...once at 5am when she makes her presence known loudly behind the front door of the house (not appreciated on weekends) and then in the afternoon at tea time. I have made two unsuccessful attempts to keep her with me but her loud protests were too unbearable...that doesn't mean I have given up!

ROBBIE

Robbie is one of Elsa's kittens. He is the most mischievous cat I have ever owned. I have several times thought that I should've named him Flash Gordon, because apart from his mischievousness, he can slip past my legs without my catching a glimpse of him! Robbie is also quite a chatterbox...we can have some very interesting discussions together :-) His most favourite past-time is trying to jump over the garden fence to sit on my neighbour's bird cages and guarding his territory, which he thinks extends to the whole block of houses...sigh. During 2004 I put up a very expensive cat fence and much to his distaste (and my great pleasure), he can no longer jump the fence. When it's bedtime he will usually come and let me know so that I will open my bedroom door for him....his favourite spot is on my bed!

PEGGY

Another one of Elsa's kittens, Peggy is extremely quiet and needs guarding over from the other cats who like to steal her food and bed. Her face has got some lovely features. I've had her for around four years and it's only just recently that she has started to settle down. She's very moody, sometimes she will let you pick her up and sometimes she won't let you even get near her.

MIMI

Mimi is another one of Elsa's kittens. She enjoys sleeping the days out and loves to eat (which cat doesn't :-). Mimi loves to give head butts and is always waiting at the front door when I come home from work. She rarely likes to go outdoors to play with the other cats and prefers to stay on her own. Her bed and tummy are her number one priorities!

BRUISER

I found this delightful little creature one morning as I opened the front door of my house. He is the friendliest cat I have ever come across. On our first meeting, he demanded to be let indoors and be fed...without any hesitation I obeyed! Bruiser likes to follow me around the house and has a habit of nibbling everyone's toes :-) He's a great big ball of fun and gets on well with everyone - cats and all!

Passages

Animals never belong to us,
They pass through our lives,
On journeys of their own.
They ask no more of us
Than that we love them and
let them go on in dignity and peace.

Animals come and go with lessons to learn
and lessons to teach
So, we love them and learn.
We accept the pain of their going
as we accept the joy of their coming.
All of it is a blessing.

~Shirley Thayer~

BRUISER: 14 JUNE 2003 to 7 JAN 2006. Very sorely missed.

MICKEY

Mickey is the latest addition to my family of pets. He arrived in August 2003, again on my doorstep. He was very sickly and it took a while for him to recover. Today he is a happy cat, loves to jump up on high cupboards, climb trees and reminds me of a mouse (hence his name, Mickey :-). Here he can be seen on his favourite tree around the time he started to recover. Since this pic was taken he has grown into a great big skinny cat with LONG legs but still meows like a kitten :-)

Hi Anne, Although I have been traveling through China I feel very guilty that I have not wished you a happy birthday. Perhaps one day you can find the time to forgive me?.....HAPPY BITHDAY!
