A few miscellaneous scenes of the city...this one, a brightly coloured cafe (in a colour I'm really into at the moment) in Kitchener St. |
| | Looking down the hill at the Cafe in Kitchener St. |
| | Kitchener/Wellesley Sts - another view of the Chinese building with the Auckland sky tower in the background. |
| | Another attractive red building on the same corner which caught my attention (seemed to be an Art Gallery). |
| | Just a couple of doors along, I found this semi tropical garden quite attractive. Would have looked much more tropical if the weather hadn't been so grey. |
| | And at the back of the little tropical garden, a surprise. A little mall, very quaint, some shops with old fashioned lanterns and signage outside their shops, and murals painted on the stairs behind the tree. I think I appreciated it more because it seemed to have been done for decorative purposes, rather than drawing a crowd, as this certainly wasn't a main mall at all. In fact otherwise it was just a cobbled area, quite empty. If it had been a nice day, I would have found it a nice, quiet, deserted spot to sit and admire the murals and surroundings. |
| | Heading south out of Auckland, we passed the High Court buildings, which were quite interesting to me as they reminded me a little of a castle (and I just love castles) |
| | Queen Street is Auckland's main street, starting at the harbour front and going right up the hill for quite some distance (10 blocks maybe)...and it was at this end (which I dubbed 'the crummy end' where we were staying). A bit unfortunate really, as the other end is much more interesting. There were restaurants and a few shops up this end, but a couple at least looked quite grimy. This whole block could do with a decent 'facelift' to bring it into line with the rest of Queen St and the central city. This row of shops I found interesting because A: they were so run down compared to the rest of the street at the other end, and reminded me a bit of Coronation Street, all identical ( old English TV series popular in NZ) |
