All along the banks of the Ganges at Rishikesh are elaborate Ashrams - places of peaceful study of Hinduism. Many were popular with western tourists coming to experience a spiritual India. This photo is taken froma quiet spot on the bank of the Ganges looking across to one of these Ashrams. |
| Edwina and I enjoy the serenity of the Ganges |
| | the nice thing about the Ganges at Rishikesh over Haridwar was that you could actually find a spot away from the crowds and shopkeepers to find out what this mighty river means to you. Here we have taken a lunch down to the beach between the two bridges and are just enjoying the scene. A picture of tranquility? |
| On the track to Kunjapuri |
| | We went for a walk to the Kunjapuri Temple on a high hillside near the town of Narendranagar about 14kms by road from town but reachable by a 4 hour walk from the back of Laxman Jhula. We set off for the day and enjoyed the walk up immensely! The trail passed through numberous small villages that were absolutely buzzing with activity. |
| | Some of the views from the trail - the eucalyptus trees reminded me of home back in Australia!! |
| Villagers on the trail to Kunjapuri |
| | Scenes of villiage life on the way up to the Kunjapuri Temple. Using our swarped Hindi we had some great little chats with people on the way and our attempts brought smiles even if our words got lost in the translation!! |
| Another village en route to Kunjapuri |
| | The yellow crop in the foreground is mustard, which provided the most photogenic setting for all these Indian villages. It seems to be a pretty versatile crop too as we saw it from the snowy villages of Upper Uttaranchal state to lower more temperate climes here around Rishikesh. |
