The Ruins of Machu Picchu

Macchu Picchu in distance, switchback train trail
.
..
...
....
Most people think Machu Picchu is up high in the Andes Mountains.
.
..
While it is true that Machu Picchu is in the Andes mountains, it's actually only sitting at a little less than 9,000 feet (approx 2700 meters?).
Along the side of Macchu Picchu
Incas favored the trapezoid shape for all openings
.
..
For a majority of the four days we hiked along the Inca Trail, we were at higher altitudes.
.
..
In fact, when we rounded the last corner on the fourth day, we proceeded through a stone archway onto the top of a hill...
Terraced side of Macchu Picchu,
Macchu Picchu was once a living city
.
..
...where we gazed down onto Machu Picchu from across a valley.
.
..
It was an emotionally satisfying reward to first see it from a distance, and to realize we'd finally made it.
There were once paths and streets here...
There were once terraces, temples, courtyards...
.
..
We were definitely lighter on our feet as a result.
.
..
...The Reward: Machu Picchu.
Homes and terraced gardens once thrived here...

I like how they let you sample it but after you drink it they tell you the fementation is cause by saliva from chewing the corn sprouts. It tasted good untile then.
