In the army... Year 1975…I'm in the army. Brigitte is pregnant. Together with some friends in the same situation, we asked for a small grant from the State. Each of us received the considerable amount of 250 French Francs for one year. I gave the money to a (forbidden) soldiers’ union and kept the receipt. Still wonder how people without helping parents could do. We are so much privileged! Learning shame. And learning how to disobey… and learning mechanics by destroying tanks. Part after part. Discovering military jails, then. Of course. Also discovering how many young French guys don't even know reading and writing... Never expected that. Spend hours reading for them letters from their parents or girl friends. And writing for them. Reinforcing my opinion that French army is definitely a bunch of stupid barbarians. And deciding that I would not pay taxes for a long time in a country that prefers to pay morons than helping young families and teaching reading and writing. I did: abandoned the country as soon as I could. A desertion? Maybe... |
Eloïse Our daughter Eloïse is born in June 1975.I’m still in the army, fighting against military stupidity. We all have windmills, don’t we…?
By luck, my two “babies” can find a refuge at my parents’ “little” house… Hard to accept. Shame again. But if I could have starved, I wouldn’t have imposed this to beloved ones. A golden exile for them both, anyway… |
First holidays... Bretagne, August 1976.Our first holidays as a family. Camping. My first job too, as an accountant in a small building company while finishing studies. We don’t have the Traction any more. Just a small Citroën 2cv, “la Deuche”, less thirsty, less expensive. Made the trip from Lorraine to Bretagne with a (tiny) plastic boat on the roof. 50km/h as a maximum. |
Installation... Bought our house in Othe in early 1977.Tough and marvellous times: working hard for almost no money, a lot of friends and a lot of dreams… Most of them were realised. Not all of them of course: it would be terrible. We always need unsatisfied dreams! Spent a few years elected in an industrial tribunal. Years when the French steel industry collapsed. Fighting, exciting and exhausting years. That's where I learnt that a man should never be judged. Only the system that made him should be. And politicians who build the system. |
| Brigitte, François and Elien. Moulins, 1982. |
Elien Picture taken by Eloïse at Moulins, spring 1982.Our son Elien was born in March 1981, when I started to work abroad... and seriously. Learning how to become a shark. For a good cause. Think it was successful. The rest is not history… Yet. |
| Brigitte and Keyvan, February 2004. |
Grand parents... On the 4th February 2004, Eloïse got a baby boy, Keyvan. Already. Wow... All this goes so fast...!!!
Maybe we finally became “bourgeois” just like our parents... |
| Brigitte (1997) and François (2001) | ...but I don’t think so. And I still love Brigitte. And children of course. And flowers. And Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé and Tzara. And Romanesque architecture. And I still hate the simple idea of an army. One of the few things I hate, together with religions and boiled salad.
Pictures taken somewhere in the desert, in Mauritania (1997) and Morocco (2001). |
