Rosetta Stone Rosetta stone was a decree written in 3 languages, around 200 BC. The top is hieroglyphics, the middle was demotic (the local Egyptian language of the day), and the bottom is Greek. Found in 1799 by Napolean, it unlocked hieroglyphics. |
Lewis Chessmen The Lewis Chessmen were of Norse origins from around 1150 AD and were found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis. Since I like chess, I found these exceptionally cool. |
Elgin Marbles The Elgin Marbles are a collection of sculptures taken from the Parthenon and the Acropolis by Lord Elgin in the 19th century. This has been the cause of some controversy. While rightfully the property of Greece, these surely would have been further damaged or destroyed if they had not been removed. |
Portland Vase The Portland Vase was made around 25 BC out of Roman-Cameo glass and has been the model for pottery makers for centuries. It got it’s name form one of it’s previous owners, the Duke of Portland |
Sutton Hoo Treasure The Sutton Hoo treasure comes from a 7th century burial ship of a king of Anglo Saxon origins. The identity of the king is theorized, but unknown. |
Mighty Aphrodite This sculpture of Aphrodite is a good example of the many scupltures in the British Musuem |
Religious history These crucifixes date from the 1450's. |
