City of Rhodes 1 City of Rhodes - port. My first picture in Rhodes after arrival by hydrofoil from Marmaris (Turkey). . |
City of Rhodes 4 Another medieval street - narrow and covered. . |
Some streets are full of flowers.
. |
City of Rhodes 4 The Ippokratous Square, a main attraction in Rhodes, always crowded by tourists from all over the world. The best place for watching and meeting people and... spending much money. . |
The source in the Ippokratous Square. |
Eating The best place for eating and wathing people is Socrates Street, the street that attracts most the visitors with its cafés, restaurants and stores. Ippokratous Square is seen in the background. . |
Shopping The island is real paradise for shopping, mainly souvenirs. What to buy? It depends on your budget and taste. Look at the pictures and choose. . |
Mandraki - the ancient harbor. Probably the most frequented part of the city is the ancient harbor - today called Mandraki - with the statue of the deer and the fawn at its entrance.Tradition tells us that this was where the famous Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, stood. . |
The island offers much more then city of Rhodes and its architecture (the most visited is Palace of the Grand Master or the Castello - overrated in my opinion), eating facilities and shopping. You can visit Municipal Art Gallery, Archaeological Museum and Museum of Decorative Arts.On the northern outskirts of the city is the famous Aquarium (Hydro Biological Station of Rhodes). The sandy beach to the west of the Yacht Club is one of the most popular on Rhodes and really nice. . |
I think Rhodes is very nice place, worth of visit. If you want more information on Rhodos there are some links to english pages: http://www.helios.gr/rhodes/ ; http://www.astronet.gr/ ; http://www.rodos.com/ ; Welcome to Rhodes. |
Mandraki - the old windmill. A long mole which protects the harbor has in its middle three old windmills and at its northern end the Fortress of St. Nicholas with the lighthouse. . |
City of Rhodes 2 Mandraki - the new yacht port. . |
Mandraki - the new yacht port. It is from here, the Mandraki harbor where the small vessels depart for daily cruises to Lindos, Symi, Kalymnos, Pserimos, Patmos and Nissiros. . |
The gate leading from the port to the city of Rhodos . The architectural aspect of the city of Rhodes is greatly influenced by the Italian architecture of the late thirties (mostly fascist) and by the presence of the fortificated Medieval Town. . |
City of Rhodes 3 The same gate from the reverse side (inside). . |
The famous Street of the Knights (greek Odos Ippoton). The street looks like it remained unattached by the passage of the 500 years since it was first built (14th century). Here the Gothic order predominates. The Inns of the various ‘Tongues’ stand in a row, with impressive arched doorways and important emblems carved above them. . |
Street of the Knights. Rhodians are proud to note their city was the first ever built on an urban plan. In fact, 2.400(!) years ago, the famous architect of the ancient times, Ippodamus, designed and applied the first ever urban plan based on a perpendicular system. . |
