In early October 2003, US Ambassador to Hungary George Herbert Walker and his wife presided over the lighting of the Chain Bridge, as part of the ongoing campaign to raise awareness of breat cancer and the need for early detection and treatment.

EU Referendum

In May 2003, Hungarians voted in a referndum to accept entry into the European Union. As part of the celebrations, the Chain Bridge was lit blue for the evening.

While Hungarians voted overwhemingly to accept entry into the EU (no surprise), less than 50% of the citizens turned out to vote, which was seen as a bit of a letdown and slight victory for Euroskeptics.
