Sound Adventures

Lyric Theatre Hammersmith
This travelogue is a collection of some of my favorite photos from my career in the concert world.

This first picture is from the stage of the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith in London. I was there for a 4 night stand with the Magnetic Fields in January of 2001, and again for 3 nights in June 2004.

At the time of the photo, the venue doors hadn't opened yet. So this is what a performer would see if they were playing to an empty house. Fortunately it was sold out on all 4 nights.
Mogwai and Big Boy
Next is a shot from 1997 of the Scottish band Mogwai. They were on their first tour of the United States. While passing through Amherst, Ohio I decided they needed to be introduced to the national treasure that is Big Boy.
Turkish Delight at the Luna Lounge
This is the Boston band Turkish Delight. I didn't formally work with them, they were just friends of mine and when I wasn't busy I'd go help them out. This is taken at the Luna Lounge in NYC in 1996.

The guitarist, Darryl Blood was my roommate when I lived in Boston. He's still rocking, but living on the other coast in LA. You can check out his music at http://www.darrylblood.com

The band liked this photo so much they used it for the cover of a live album.
Church of St. Philip Neri
In 1997 I spent some time touring with the band Low. In November we did a show in a Louisville chuch. The ambient acoustics were perfect for the band's sparse sound. I had been taping the shows as a matter of habit (you never know what you may get), and this particular recording came out beautifully. About a year later it was released on CD, with this picture on the cover. I wandered up into the choir loft and snapped it while the opening band was playing.
Pete and me
Peter Gabriel joined the Magnetic Fields onstage during the 2001 series at the Lyric, singing a song during the encore. It was a pleasure to be working on the soundboard while he performed. Afterwards he was nice enough to pose for a shot with me. I'm the one on the right, lol.
A series of unfortunate accordian solos
One more picture from the Lyric...the man rocking out on the accordian is occasional Magnetic Fields co-conspirator, author Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket). He's an excellent musician and singer, and also a lot of fun behind the scenes.
Herman Jose show
This is the Magnetic Fields on the set of the Herman Jose show near Lisbon, Portugal. A cool set and great photo op, but overall not the best experience. We were given no official time to perform, so we explained that we had a 7AM flight to Dublin and asked to go on early in the show. They put us on last, after 2 AM, and actually ended the show while the band was still playing!

I see that Mr. Jose was indicted in a pedophile scandal. Guess we don't have to worry about getting a better time slot next time!
Metal!
Since Norwegians speak the language so well, it always surprises me when I see band names in english that make very little sense. This poster was hung in the Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo. Looks like a pretty crazy show. In case you can't read them, the names are "Silent Vanquish", "Death Trooper" and "Blood Tsunami".

While the band names are certainly amusing, I won't make fun of them. Norway is actually a center of the Black Metal scene. I have a lot of respect for Telemark's "Emperor", who have sold hundreds of thousands of records worldwide. But unfortunately people mostly write about Mayhem and Barzum, two bands who were busy murdering each other's (and their own)members in the early 90's.
