Snowfall on Candlelight Tour Homes

by BeverlyTyler - last update: Jan 21, 2004

Setauket Post Office is a beacon of light

December 5th, 2003
Walking along Main & Lake Streets in Setauket in the light but steadily falling snow I took pictures of the homes featured on this year's Three Village Historical Society Candlelight House Tour. The tour was scheduled for Dec. 5th & 6th, but due to the snowfall the tour on the 6th was postponed to the 7th.

I also took pictures of the special buildings you see when you walk along Main Street
CHT House

A former farmhouse extensively restored

This was the home of Setauket's last miller Everett Hawkins. He began living here after selling the mill cottage, mill and barn to Ward Melville to create the Frank Melville Memorial Park
CHT Church

The Bethel AME Church

The African Methodist Episcopal Church on Christian Ave., just off Main Street, was featured on this year's tour. Built in 1909 the church is the center of the African-American Christian Avenue community. The community has existed here since the early 1700s.
CHT Bayles-Swezey House

Three Village Historical Society Headquarters

Located at 93 North Country Road, this circa 1800 farmhouse is now the headquarters of the Three Village Historical Society.

The building also includes an exhibition room featuring "The Sailing Circle: 19th Century Seafaring Women and Families from New York."

The exhibition features the photographs, artifacts, diaries, letters, journals and logbooks of the women and children who accompanied their husbands and fathers on wooden sailing ships up and down the Atlantic coast and around the world.
