Great Ocean Road & The Twelve Apostles

by dracko - last update: Jan 8, 2004

The Great Ocean Road is a gorgeous coastal road that stretches for hundreds of kilometers along the coast of Victoria from Melbourne almost all the way to Adelaide in South Australia. The scenery along the road is beyond comparison; my meagre pictures and ramblings certainly aren't sufficient to properly describe the stunning views that greet you around every turn. The sapphire-blue ocean, the lush green valleys, small creeks, rainforests, and endless hills and hairpin turns all contribute to an amazing experience both for the sightseer and the driver in you.
One of the most famous attractions on the Great Ocean Road are the Twelve Apostles. The Apostles are giant limestone pillars rising up from the sand at ocean's edge that have been formed by the pounding waves for over millions of years. They make for an incredible sight, be it from the observation walkways or from the air, if you choose to splurge on a helicopter ride.
Some of the best views of the Apostles can be seen from this cliff that juts out into the ocean. The winds and the waves have been working on this one for quite a while already, and who knows, perhaps in another million years or so this will become the 13th apostle...
Some of the Apostles are shy. They don't get along well with the others, or perhaps they just wanted some privacy...
The views are absolutely unbelievable!
A postcard on every turn!
You never know who you'll meet as you drive along the road. We happened to stumble upon this friendly little guy as he was waddling along the side of the road, only to promptly run into the brush alongside it and climbing the first tree he could find as soon as he saw us. Luckily, the first tree he could find was only about 6-7feet high :)

I want to send your Melb page address to our local travel people. It's that "intangible something" you put it so well. Dare I say it is the friendliness in its layback way, as you felt. I always feel it when I come "Home". Terrific material... thank you.

The photos you took while on Great Ocean Road are amazing! Kind of reminds me of the Pacific Coast Highway.
