Hristos se Rodi!

Cesnica - Serbian Christmas Bread
When Serbian Christmas falls on a work day, as it did this year, it is rather hard to put on a big shebang. One thing we always make sure we have is the Serbian Christmas Bread or cesnica.
Cesnica - Serbian Christmas Bread

Cesnica

1 package yeast
1/4 cup warm water
3 tablespoons sugar
2 eggs (beaten)
3/4 cup milk (warmed)
1 cup warm water
1/2 cup butter (1 cube - melted)
4 cups bread flour
1 egg (beaten - for brushing on dough)

Dissolve sugar in 1/4 cup warm water and sugar. Combine all ingredients (except for third egg) and knead by hand or in bread mixer. Dough will be sticky. Put dough in buttered bowl, cover with cellophane wrap and let rise to double in size.

Punch dough down (will still be sticky, but that is fine). Cut off small piece of dough for a cross. Put rest of dough in a buttered springform pan. Hide a coin in the dough. Decorate with reserved dough to create a cross. Cover with waxed paper and let rise in a warm room for about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Brush top of dough with beaten egg. Bake for 40 minutes. Serve warm for most delicious results!

Breaking the Bread

Everyone is hoping he or she will be the fortunate one to find the lucky coin!

The victor who found the lucky coin -- he will receive one year of good fortune. That is good news since he learns to drive this year!

Hi kiddo, how is it going? I've been noticing your stalk comments on my Canadian pages, thanks for the visits. They're coming along. B and I are heading out to the opera tonight... Barber of Seville. :)

Hi Karen, congratulations to your offspring for getting into such good universities. I'm still waiting to see your VT page on Rohnert Park, California, LOL.

How were your vacations in France? No new pages about your trip? I know it is awfully time consuming...

I know that I am drawn to Marin because I want a home that I am happy to return to, in an area I find to be as beautiful as some of the places we travel to. Our move north is our next adventure! Thanks for the inspiration.
