Great Horned Owl - West Village, NYC December 4, 2003
I woke shortly before dawn to see this magnificant bird of prey outside my window ... Very unusual for Manhattan ... He is out there still as I write this ... turning his head from side to side but otherwise unmoving ... waiting.
2:15PM He remains in the tree just above my back porch ... some eight hours after I first spotted him ... The neighborhood birds that were pestering him earlier have all gone now, only a small dog in an upper floor of the building next door continues to sound the alarm to his fellow snack-sized critters inhabiting the shared back yards of this stretch of the village. The smaller birds ... pigeons, doves have made no appearance today - not a single sparrow in the sky.
3:45PM He has flown.
UPDATE 12-10-03
It was determined by the local Audubon Society that a Peregrine Falcon spent a brief period time here as well that day. He was spotted in one of the pictures. |

The paragraph you wrote on Kwa Zulu-Natal is possibly the most moving I came across here on VT. Thanks for that, really. | croisbeauty Mon May 26, 2008 00:22 UTC happy birthday Richard, sorry if belated |
