One of Upolu's most important wetland areas are located around the villages of Sataoa and Sa'anapu on the south coast. In an effort to preserve this the area has been declared a conservation area with support from UNESCO. More information about the project is available at the UNESCO site. The local conservation comitee maintains a nature trail trough the mangroves ending up by the water where you can be taken on an outrigger canoe tour. Have a look at my must see activities tips for details about the tour. |
| Allong the mangrove trail |
Well off the beaten path on the mangrove trail. |
| Traditional samoan outrigger canoe |
The outrigger canoes are used by the village men when they go fishing on the reef. |
I was staying a few nights with the Lanu family and the father of the family was the one who did the mangrove canoe tour. |
The mangrove provides habitats for the breeding of fish and crabs, and birds thrive in the trees. |
A few hours here will provide many hours of memories when you are well home. |
