Independant State of Samoa Travel Guide: 171 reviews and 336 photos

The waterfalls of Upolu can be seen in a day.

Rent a car in Apia, get a map from the Samoan visitors centre as the one you will get from car rental companies usually is less detailed.

Start by driving the Cross Island Road to the south side of the island were you will be passing the Papapapai-tai falls. Then continue east along the South Island Road for Togitogiga falls and Sopo'aga falls before you start heading north for the Fuipisia falls, Falefa falls, the rather hard to get to waterfall near Sauniatu and finally the Papasee'a Sliding rock west of Apia.

Expect to pay a custom fee of a few talla, to the owners of the land for entrance at most places.

Papapapai-tai falls

The 100 m Papapapai-tai falls are located on the Cross Island Road 3 km south of the Bahai temple.

Togitogiga falls

The Togitogiga falls is located on the south side of Upolu Island a short walk from the southern Main Coast Road. It consists of several falls separated by pools wich makes this a nice place for freshwater swimming.

Sopo'aga falls

The 50 m Sopo'aga falls is located on Le Mafa Pass Road just when you have left the southern Main Coast Road and started heading north. Getting down to the bottom og the gorge is propably a very dificult trek, but the view from the west lookout is magnificent.

Fuipisia falls

The 55 m Fuipisia falls are located a few km up the Le Mafa Pass Road from the Sopo'aga falls. You will pas an orchid garden and a taro field on the way to the lookout.

The waterfall near Sauniatu

If you have a couple of hours you dont mind spending off the beaten path go to The waterfall near Sauniatu. To get there you must have a 4WD to get up the gravel road from Falefa on the Main East Road. It is hard to find due to heavy overgrowth, but ask someone on the way and they gladly hop on and show you the way. This is not like those previous mentioned high waterfalls. but nice due to its overgrowth and inaccesibilty.

There is supposed to be woodcarvings of Samoan Legends in this area, but the guy who showed me the way did not know about this, or perhaps would not show me. I guess there was not many visitors up here and that they may have wanted to keep the sacred place a secret.

Papasee'a sliding rock

This is noe of the popular places for kids and those seeking a light adrenaline kick. Natural waterslides into a junglepool that beats any artificial resort construct. The highest is five meters.

If you want the impression of a remote scenic waterfall, go on a sunday while most people are in churc, and you will have it all to yourself.

The Falefa waterfall

I'm not sure if this the Falefa waterfall, but i took this picture from the bus on the way to Aleipata, propably in the area of Falefa.

The day I drove aorund Upolu island to se all the waterfalls I drove past the Falefa falls, without realising that I missed it.

Make sure you don't.
