(ALL PHOTOS TAKEN BY MICHEAL GALGINAITIS, AN ANTHROPOLOGIST STUDYING FOR THE GOV'T) I went out whaling with Thomas Napageak's crew this year and here are a few pics from Cross Island, Nuiqsit whalers base camp during whaling season, approximately 80 miles east of Nuiqsit and C.Island is 14 miles north-northeast from west dock at Prudhoe Bay......This is me helping cut up a 41 foot bowhead.....This is my first time Whaling and one of my all time favorite experiences, thanks to Thomas Napageak Sr and Jr. Whaling season started sept 1 and we left Cross Island sept 10, Nuiqsit got their quota of 4 whales early after the start of the season, i've heard stories of them getting stuck on Cross Island because of freeze up, the most exciting part of Whaling is the chase, when someone see's a Whale blow then they'd get on the radio telling everyone else out in the hunt that they see a blow at such and such a place, every boat in the area would head out in the direction and help out with the hunt and also help out towing the Bowhead back to Cross Island for the harvest. |
| | whaling at cross island definately one of my favorite memories, whaling season started sept.1, 2003 and we left cross island sept.10, 2003, Nuiqsit's quota is 4 bowheads and we got all four. this is my first year out whaling and am up for it again if I ever get the opportunity. |
| 41 feet and 1 inch bowhead |
| | this one only took one bomb to kill, tuuqak the harpooner hit the bowhead on the exact spot and this was our only whale that took one hit to kill..........................................Ok now, here's a few laughs.....................In case you needed further proof that the human race is doomed through stupidity, here are some actual label instructions on consumer goods:
1. On Sears hairdryer: "Do not use while sleeping". [Gee, that's the only time I have to work on my hair]
2. On a bag of Fritos: "You could be winner! No purchase necessary. Details inside". [Evidently, the shoplifter special]
3. On a bar of Dial soap: "Directions: Use like regular soap." [And that would be how...?]
4. On some Swanson frozen dinners: "Serving suggestions: Defrost." [But it's *just* a suggestion]
5. On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom of box): "Do not turn upside down". [Oops, too late!]
6. On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding: "Product will be hot after heating". [As sure as night follows the day . . . ..]
7. On packaging for a Rowenta iron: "Do not iron clothes on body" [But wouldn't this save even more time?]
8. On Boot's Children's Cough Medicine: "Do not drive a car or operate machinery after taking this medication". [We could do a lot to reduce the rate of construction accidents if we could just get those 5-year-olds with head-colds off those forklifts.]
9. On Nytol Sleep Aid: "Warning: May cause drowsiness". [One would hope]
10. On most brands of Christmas lights: "For indoor or outdoor use only". [As opposed to what?]
11. On a Japanese food processor: "Not to be used for the other use". I gotta admit, I'm curious].
12. On Sainsbury's peanuts: "Warning: Contains nuts". [NEWS FLASH]
13. On an American Airlines packet of nuts: "Instructions: Open packet, eat nuts." [Step 3: Fly Delta]
14. On a child's Superman costume: Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly". [I don't blame the company. I do blame parents for this one!]
15. On a Swedish chain saw: "Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands or genitals". [Was there a chance of this happening somewhere?.....Good grief! |
| | we are preparing the rope and ready to pull the bowhead up with the winch, the line snapped a few times and when it snaps man it snaps. |
| | ""The Northwest Ordinance, enacted by Congress in 1787 The utmost good faith shall always be observed toward the Indians; their lands and property shall never be taken from them without their consent; and in their property, rights, and liberty they never shall be invaded or disturbed unless in just and lawful wars authorized by Congress; but laws founded in justice and humanity shall, from time to time, be made, for preventing wrong, being done to them and for preserving peace and friendship with them…(page 274, 500 Nations)""...............here are a few historical statements and poems that I like and they are not meant to offend anyone...... |
| | “OF HUMILITY” It is related of an illustrious king, that one night while a number of people were assembled about him, he arose to trim the lamp. Whereupon it was said to him, ’why didst thou not utter a command, which would have sufficed?’ And he answered them, ‘As a king I rose, and as a king I resume my seat…’ Humility is the only quality which no man envies. When one is gifted with its presence, he has already gained superiority. It is said, ‘Whomsoever the Lord loveth he inspireth with contentment.’ By Solomon ibn Gabirol, from the ‘improvement of the moral qualities’. 11th century Spanish Jew |

| | 1870-Chief Red Cloud-Lakota-visits Washington and New York Newspaper reporters covering the meeting conveyed Red Cloud’s charges to their readers, adding their own editorial reactions. Wrote ‘The New York Times: “We might search in vain through a month’s file of the Congressional Globe for a speech so interesting as that delivered by Red Cloud at the Indian Council yesterday…The clear conception which this unlettered savage possesses of what he claims as his rights, and what he is disposed to resent in his wrong, shows very plainly the necessity for treating with the leaders of the aboriginal “nations” on some straight forward and intelligible principle. The attempt to cajole and bamboozle [the Indians] as if they were deficient in intelligence, ought to be abandoned, no less than the policy of hunting them down like wild beasts.” ……Added the New York Herald- “Palaver has very little effect on the Indian character…faithlessness on our part in the matter of treaties, and gross swindling of the Indians…are at the bottom of all this Indian trouble.”…. | | “Born to Manifest the Glory” by Nelson Mandela “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves-who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” |
