| Each region of the country has its own tradition and way of practice due to local belief. The krathongs (banana-leaf-floats) areelaborately decorated in form of lotus made of local materials. At night, people gather in their thousands beside the canals and rivers. With a silent prayer they carefully place their krathongs with flowers, incense and one or more lit candles inside in the water and release them to the current. Some also put their hairs and nails as well as coins to signify longevity, fulfillment of wishes and release from sins. The young couples pray for their love. After the releasing of krathong to the river, people celebrate with fireworks, folk entertainment, display and more. This festival opens opportunity for the foreign visitors to join its various activities with no effect caused to its core. The Tourism Authority of Thailand promotes the event as "the Festival of the World", maintaining the balance of local culture and tourism promotion so that the foreign visitors are able to understand the Thai traditional way of life. |
