December Music Gig at Healesville Terminus Hotel

by Kate-Me - last update: Dec 12, 2003

Saturday night at the Terminus...

Our free afternoon in Healesville passed quite quickly, and before we knew it, it was time to meet the other guys in the pub and wait for dinner to be over in the dining room so we could start setting up the equipment.

At 11.30 the gig began, and we had about a total of 15 people in the audience (all mostly clustered around the bar, of course). We heard there was a huge 21st birthday party in town that night, and supposed much of our potential audience could be there....

At 2 am, who should arrive, but a slightly drunken but still steady happy looking young guy wearing a birthday card for a shirt (it's often tradition in Australia on the last day of secondary school, all your mates sign and put messages in texta all over your school shirt like grafitti).

Wilbur made quite a funny spectacle as he danced away for ages, alcohol always in hand.
Dean, the lead singer, loves to ad lib, so after singing Happy Birthday, let Wilbur come up the front and sing a bit with him - well, it didn't fail totally.
Wilbur's friends liked it and cheered him on anyway.
Why stop at one lot of audience participation? This time Dean found himself some girls to join in a simple yelling chorus...
When half of Wilbur's friends (approx 50 of them) got up on the dance floor, the whole pub atmosphere was transformed, almost like magic, compared the rather flat atmosphere with only 15 in the pub earlier...

Though those 15 had been die hard fans of the music (The Angels) and knew all the words, yelled out for their favourite song to be played next, even though the Angels were at their height in the 70's/early 80's and some of the audience seemed too young...
The guy in the yellow shirt was rather amusing. He also had a turn at the microphone early on, and managed to do really well. He was confident, he knew all the words to the song and he wasn't even an Aussie! That was amazing (as though the band was huge here, they really weren't for many years outside of Australia, though they toured extensively). The first time I've heard Angels music sung with an Italian accent! Rather cool!
Dean in full swing...he takes the 'rock star' persona business very seriously (and has some serious fun) while he's on stage.
And here's my Paul....

By the end, the atmosphere had picked up so much to what it had been earlier, that the band decided to do an encore after all, and ended up playing till 2.40, 20 minutes longer than they had been contracted to do.

It ended up being a great night, all thanks to the audience!

To Healesville by public transport catch the train to Lilydale. There's a bus service from Lilydale station to Healesville & some buses that go to the sanctuary. Trains from Melbourne about every 30 mins but buses not very frequent so check timetable

healesville is 1hr 30 mins away from melbourne by public transport. Instead of going to hurstbridge, get on the train to Lilydale and from Lilydale get on a Mckenzie's bus to Healesville via Yarra Glen. it's a lot quiker

Lovely photos & excellent info on this lovely place that O/S visitors really should see. At my wife's work they had a pair of nesting Plovers with 2 chicks & all seemed fairly used to the passing people. Mum would sometimes herd the chicks away.
