| Common Black Hawk (juvenile) - Corcovado |
In this travelogue I have put some miscellaneous bird photos I have taken in Costa Rica. Other bird photos can be found in other travelogues and in some Must see activities tips. |
| Anhinga - The Snakebird (Tortuguero) |
| | Anhinga This is a fish eating bird usually found in rivers and canals. It dives underwater and literally harpoons fish with its long pointed beak. It is also called the Snakebird as it swims completely submerged with just its long neck and head poking out of the water resembling a snake or a small lochness monster! |
Scarlet Rumped Tanager This is the male Scarlet Rumped Tanager. These are small and common black birds with a very bright scarlet rump. | | | Scarlet Rumped Tanager (Corcovado) |
|
| Brown Pelican (Cano Island) |
| | Brown Pelican Pelicans can be seen along both shores but especially on the Pacific Coast. They fly in almost straight lines with synchronised wing beats. |
Red Lored Parrot Parrots are a highlight of Costa Rica and are so beautiful to watch in the wild. They are extremely noisy as well and in most cases yuo can hear them before you see them! | | | Red Lored Parrot (Arenal Lake) |
|
| Violet Sabrewing (Monteverde) |
| | Violet Sabrewing This is one of the most stunning hummingbirds of Costa Rica and the largest one (or so I think). |
Yellow Crowned Night Heron | | | Yellow Crowned Night Heron (Tortuguero) |
|
| Chestnut Mandibled Toucan (Tortuguero) |
| | Chestnut Mandibled Toucan This is the largest Toucan inhabiting Costa Rica. |
