Around Bohinj

by dabidc - last update: Jan 13, 2004

West end of Bohinj lake
The calm waters of the lake look idyllic and do not reflect the tough climb that awaits you just 5 kms west . The climb up the cliff of Komarca can be considered the start of a hike to the top of Triglav. It can also be considered as the start of a trail that joins the seven permanent lakes on the way to Triglav.

I had visited the Savica Falls on a day visit the previous year from Bled and I came back a year later to explore the zig zag climb up Komarca. I got to the Black Lake and a few kms further but since I was not prepared to hike any more I returned the way I had come and continued with my vacation at the the Stare pension at Ukanc.

I also visited the Vogel mountain and Ribcev Laz, as well as completing a walk all around Bohinj Jezero.

I took many photos including an impressive one from the top of Komarca, but alas I seem to have lost it in the many photos I have around the house.

For me the lake and surroundings are an area of outstanding beauty.
One way to Komarca and Savica falls

Leaving Ukanc

The path looks uninteresting at first glance but the trees soon cover the path and the shade from the trees gives one a boost.

Soon the trees are tall and I think many Beech trees are present as you come to the path to climb Komarca or continue on the path, cross the Savica and stop for a snack or ice cream at the restaurant, as you head towards the Falls of the Sava river.

The disappearing falls.

At the end of the Bohinj valley prepare for an impressive sight as the Savica river tumbles out of a hole in the escarpment and falls into a narrow cleft . If you do get close to the pool at the base of the Falls, prepare for a wet few minutes.

There is a small fee to walk the last few metres.

I guess the water comes from some of the 7 Lakes along the way to climbing Mount Triglav.
Savica Falls.
