This is a list of things I wrote down after getting home from my trip this summer:
Things to remember for the next European backpacking trip
1. Always have a Plan B and a Plan C and Plan D...it's no fun when plan A falls through and you don't know where you're going to sleep.
2. Don't trust anyone-a lot of people say things they really don't mean like, "Oh come visit me in _____." and then flake on you.
3. Take a lock-it could come in handy when staying in dorm-style rooms at hostels and you don't want to worry about your stuff getting stolen.
4. Ziploc bags...there are a million uses for these.
5. Flatware
6. Don't overpack! I learned my lesson last time...
7. Train: regional is cheaper, but much slower so plan accordingly-keep an eye out for specials like Schönes Wochenende Karte.
8. A tourist/backpacking book isn't a bad idea, but it probably has just as much really lame stuff as good stuff.
9. Know who you can trust ie: spend more time with good friends than on your own.
10. Summertime is tourist time.
11. Summertime is renovation time.
12. Summertime is very expensive to fly.
13. Summertime in Europe is hot and humid without AC.
14. Efficiency! The less ATM withdrawals the better. Those fees add up quickly.
15. Same goes for the internet-sometimes it's cheap; sometimes it's super expensive.
16. Never believe a boy when he says he doesn't have a girlfriend back home.
17. A week and a half of backpacking with only one other person is just long enough. You get on each other's nerves, but by the time it's really bad, it's over.
18. Bring something to read in your native language.
19. Know how to use your phone card before any emergencies occur. Phones in Europe can be expensive and confusing. |
