Although Robben Island is best know for being the place where Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison, it's history as a place of banishment goes back much further.
Through the years the island was used to house troublemakers, lepers and political prisoners.
Today it is inhabited only by a few museum staff. |
|  | Getting there in style - not any more! Your trip to Robben Island will no longer be aboard one of the two high speed ferries, Makana or the Autshumatu since the contract with that company was terminated at the end of August 2006.
Tourists are now once again taken across on the original ferries that were used to transport prisoners to and from the island. This means that it now takes about 40 minutes each way - almost twice as long as with the high speed boats |
Point of departure The ferry departs for Robben Island from the Nelson Mandela Gateway Centre which is near the old Clock Tower . |
