This photo was taken on the road to Bathsheba.
Unfortunately there are only a few working sugar cane factories operating now. The smell when you are in the vicinity is very strong.
A friend actually took me round a factory (with permission of course) and explained all the different processes from start to finish.
Sugar cane is often strewn over the roads, but to chew the raw cane is an acquired taste.

| | Cane field We stopped our hired Moke to take the photo with the sugar cane fields either side of the road.
When all the cane has been cut then Crop Over begins, and the island parties.
During crop over month, there are plenty of activities, calypso competitions, all sorts of events happening.
If you are interested in reading about the happenings in Barbados, then go to the newspaper and read on line. www.nationnews.com. (I read it every day).
This photo was taken in l987, in the month of April. |
Fisherman's Pub This photograph taken in April l987 shows the Fisherman's Pub (rum shop) at Speightstown, on the west coast of Barbados.
This pub is still there, only now it is painted a very bright orange/red/oh lots of bright colours, and tables and chairs on the pavement.
This pub extends back onto the seashore, and has a lot of tables inside and serves good food so I am reliably informed. Only bought a drink here.
Speightstown has had a revamp since this picture was taken, they have a new bus terminal, and have quite a few shops, and a lovely Art Gallery. | | |
| | Just Limin' Limin' at the Rum Shop in Speightstown, (pic taken in1987) Rum shop has new livery. Very smart now. |
Looks like Cornwall , England This picture, also taken in l987, shows the North Point on Barbados, and this scene is remarkably like the coastline of Cornwall, England.
No swimming allowed here !!
The noise is deafening with the waves pounding the rocks, it looks like boiling water, and it is eroding the shorline too.

| | Chattel House Here is a Chattel House, out of town, this one has not been painted in the bright colours that some of them do.

Out of city street scene This picture (taken l987) shows an old chattel house, and right next door a small modern single storey house.
This is out of the city limits, so just a country road scene.

| | Produce Stall This enterprising person built a produce stall outside his/her home, to attract the passing trade.
I bought banana's from here.
This actual house/stall is under the flight path of incoming aircraft to Grantley Adams International Airport. The noise is deafening, and had to wait until the plane flew over before we could converse. |
