'Kerkboog' (1540 and 1605), the archway leading from the Grote Markt or marketplace to St. Stevenskerk. A very fine example of the Renaissance style. It is said to feature in many books on architectural history.
Facade of the 'Waaggebouw' (1612 by Hendrick de Keyser), the former weighing-house.
Tower of St. Stevenskerk (Saint Stephan's Church) in Renaissance style. It's a very elaborate construction: notice the actual bell tower with its large openings, the balustrade with the gargoyles, and the flag of Nijmegen sticking out of the bulb or pear-shaped part of the tower. Most of St. Stevens Tower was rebuilt after World War II.
Given the fact that I was born in the city of Nijmegen I cannot look at the bell tower without thinking of the words: "Al mot ik kruupe, op blote voeten goan, Ik wil nog een keer de Sint-Stevens heuren sloan"
Re-enactment of a medieval market day outside St. Stevenskerk, August 2005. It even included a medieval fashion show, giving a detailed impression of 15th century fashion!
In that same month, August 2005, we also had a chance to see the interior of the Koenig Organ at St Stevenskerk. There are some 3,600 organ pipes here! This type of visit is rarely organized, so we were very lucky to add these pictures and complete this part of our tour through Nijmegen.
Jennie at the keyboard of the Koenig-organ.
Legendary female saint with a beard (!), Sinte Ontcommer, a 15th century painting in the northern transept of St. Stevenskerk.
Detail on the facade of the 'Latijnse School' (1544). The text above the little putto reads: Ante iudicium interroga te ipsum, that is: Examine yourself before the (Last) Judgement.
