Communication between the fortress and the land was done by means of a wooden mobile bridge, which joined the fortress gate with the hill that faced it. In case of emergency it was pulled towards the inside part of Kastro and as a result it did not allow enemies to enter. On top of the external gate there was a terrace with the essential "zematistra", a skillet full of boiling water or oil to scald intruders.
Today some modification was necessary and a stone stairs has been made to reach the Gate.

| An old house in Kastro, Skiathos island |
| | Once there were about 300 houses and 22 churches within the Castle. Today 3 churches survived, one more is havily damaged and one has been recently restored. The house in the photo has also been restored as a model of the past. Just behind it you can see the damaged church of Evangelistria.
About 1830 AD, when the problems ended, as soon as they became free from Ottoman domination and foresaw the possibility of a reasonably peaceful future, the inhabitants left Kastro and moved back to the site of modern-day Skiathos town. |
