Avery Island is such a unique island. It really is a salt dome, extending eight miles beneath the surface. that pushed the earth up around it forming Avery Island. All around this amazing island is water and marshes, with some of the most vibrant and beautiful flora and fauna on earth. |
Bamboo grows abundantly here at Avery Island. Not only the bamboo, but the insects are abundant too!!! The Louisiana "Bird" should be changed from the brown pelican to the mosquito!! I have never seen so many of these "little vampires" in all my life. They can reduce a man to the size of a child in only minutes if left alone!! I am sure at one point, I had so many mosquitos on me that my feet were off the ground!! Just kidding, but they are BAD during the warm season. Be sure to bring an ample supply of insect repellent. |

This is the main factory of Tabasco. Inside are the many machines required to fill, label and package the bottles. Tabasco now makes over 34 different products. All of these peppers are hand picked between August and December as they reach the perfect stage of ripeness. Newly harvested peppers are mashed at the factory with a little Avery Island salt. The mash ferments and ages for three years in white oak barrels, covered with a thick layer of salt to prevent air from entering the barrels. Finally, the aged mash is mixed with special premium vinegar, stirred for a month, strained and poured into their famous bottles for distribution. There is also a country store where you can buy their products and gift items. You can visit their web site at www.tabasco.com |
The Jungle Gardens of Avery Island The Jungle Gardens of Avery Island are truly amazing. Such beauty and raw nature, that has not been changed or influenced by man. One never know what you will encounter when strolling through this enchanted park. Be prepared to have your senses "assaulted" with the sights and smells of nature at its best! |
Bayou Wonderland is the only words to describe the jungle gardens of Avery Island, abounding with beautiful and exotic plants and flowers mirrored in slow-moving bayous. Overhead can be seen the "Spanish Moss" hanging from the trees, a sight so typical in the south. |
Be careful where you eat your lunch or you could be an "alligator's snack"!! |
Live oak trees hundreds of years old can be seen at every turn, with the Spanish Moss flowing in the breeze. |
