Desert Drive (Walnut Canyon Trail)

Don't miss out on the beauty outside the caverns!

Barrel and Prickly Pear cactus
If you take the Cavern tour early enough, you will have enough time afterwards (before the 'sbatacular dusk flight) to see some awesome natural desert wonders along the Desert Drive or Walnut Canyon trail. There is a slim 50cent fee for a brochure at the beginning of the trail, but you will find it very helpful in your self guided tour.

9.5 miles of desert beauty

Follow the unpaved road and you will find many desert plants, and animals along the way. Plants are easy to spot, but you will have to get out of the car and really look if you're looking for the four legged critters that live in this region. Here is a lizard we found taking cover from the afternoon heat as we approached.
Lizard, right at home!
Desert rabbit

Other Animals out and about

I didn't really expect to see many animals out in the hot afternoon, but there were a few brave fellows in search of what I don't know! Here is a jack rabbit that we didn't notice until we saw it's huge ears move.

Fascinating plants

I have a fascination with plants, all sorts of plants. It was my mission to see as many desert plants as possible ... but the real task was to classify them later! Here is a picture of "cholla" pronounce "CHOY-ya"
Cholla, Walking Cane Cholla
Prickly Pear

Prickly Pear Cactus

This cactus is probably known world wide, and can even be found in Hawaii. It's called prickly pear, and it's fruit (usually deep purple) makes a wonderful jam.
