"VAN GOGH" Amsterdam Travelogue by morganna

Amsterdam Travel Guide: 12,282 reviews and 19,533 photos

This man watched reality only through colours. He did'nt saw a wheat field, but a brilliant yellow under a violet in the sunset, when the colours are just opposite.

It's incredible how an aching soul like him could create that strong and vibrant paintings. But he did. He painted as a mad he was, and now we have his work here and there, all around the world. But as he was from Netherlands, the best is locate this tribute in the Amsterdam page, where there is his museum (tip).

Thanks for your letter, Vincent.

THE STARRY NIGHT
1889
Museum of Modern Art, New York

One of my favourites, of course. Note the living and vibrant movement of this sky. A wonderul nightmare.

IRISES
1889
Getty Museum, Malibu, California

Maybe this is not the typicall flower painting by Vincent, but I use to prefer flowers in nature. Here you can apreciate some japanese influence in the way use dark lines to make outlines.

.

L'EGLISE D'AUVERS-SUR-OISE
1890
Musee d'Orsay, Paris

This is the first real Van Gogh I saw. You don't know how it feels until you are in front of one of them. I think that as he give his life for painting, so you can feel this life when you see his paintings.

.

CAFE TERRACE ON THE PLACE DU FORUM
September 1888
Rijksmuseum Kroller-Mueller, Otterlo

He loved opposite colours. Here, dark blue and yellow/orange.

LA CHAMBRE DE VAN GOGH A ARLES
1889
Musee d'Orsay, Paris

There are another version of this work in Amsterdam. He use to make a few copies of the same painting for different people and to make improvements.
The point of view of this painting is, once more, amazing.

OLIVE TREES WITH ALPILLES IN BACKGROUND
1889
Whitney Collection

I love Vincent because of his colours. But we could not apreciate these colours without his gesture. I dont' choose this work for the colours, but for the gesture. Look at the curve lines, repeating them in the clouds or the floor in the same way he has to do with the olive trees forms.

THE HARVEST
1888, June
Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

He used to paint about peasant life. He love this way of life, and the colours of those landscapes.
