ATC2003: Appalachian Trail Conference A group of AMSeers (including me) from Delaware Valley attended the ATC2003 biennial event held at Waterville Valley, New Hampshire on the last weekend of July 2003.
Part of the hiking sessions of the conference were organized hikes on the White Mountains. On August 1, 2003 we hiked the Frankenstein Cliff Trail on the White Mountains going to the Arethusa Falls which is considered the largest waterfall in all of New Hampshire.
The water was a little thin then but it did not diminished the awesome experience we had. |
| View Atop The Loon Mountain | On the last day of the conference, everybody was free to explore the Whites. I decided to take a gondola ride to the top of the Loon Mountain. The view was awesome!
This resort provides one of the best skiing trails in NH.
On my way there, I drove thru scenic Kangamangus Highway, took the cog railway tram up the top of Mt. Washington, checkout the tip of the Franconia Notch gateway where the 'Old Man Of the Mountain' used to be, and enjoyed the Lower Falls, Rocky Gorge & Sabbaday Falls. |
The Pulpit and The Pinnacle Back to the Delaware Valley (Philadelphia area) We went on a Sunday (08/24/2003) hike to the Pulpit Overlook and The Pinnacle in Hamburg, PA. The drive from our place (King of Prussia) to the trail head was so tricky that we lost our way :( Fortunately, we found our way and got there on-time. I am writint the route here just in case I wanted to go there next time: Rt. 422W -> Rt 61N -> State St -> Mountain Rd |
Ten-Mile Hike AMC Monday (08/25/2003) scouting hike on the Horseshoe Trail on Berks County, PA.
The trail was not properly maintained. There were a lot of fallen trees (maybe from a little tornado that passed thru the area) at the beginning of the hike. It was a nice hike with lots of ascent and descent. |
Tuesday Hikes At The Wissahickon Among the highlights of the hikes are: The Valley Green Inn, The Lovers' Leap Overlook, The Benjamin Franklin Monument atop a hill, and the Forbidden Drive. |
Thursday Hikes At Valley Forge One of the AMC-organized hikes in the Philadelphia region is the weekly Thursday night hike at Valley Forge National Historical Park.
This is a very good break of the monotony (sometimes) of the week. After office-hours, AMSeers go for at least six (6) miles of hiking on the trails of Mt. Joy and Mt. Misery (twin peaks) of the park. You can see deers and huts (replica of what the Continental Army used during the war) aside from exploring the wooded trails in this gem of a park very close to Center City. |
