Go to any modern Egyptian coffee shop, even in the most touristic of hotels, and one will find men (and yes, sometimes even women) smoking large pipes. Now get those rude ideas out of your head, for the content is most often a form of dried apple tobacco or regular tobacco, that has frequently been soaked in molasses. This content is filtered through a water basin for smoothness.
Sometimes called a hookah or Sheesha Pipe, their water basin is made of glass, while much of the remainder of the pipe is of brass. They make a fine oriental addition to anyone’s Middle Eastern decor.
