Viðareiði and the Enniberg Cliffs From Torshavn we made the journey to the Faroes Northernmost settlement of Vidareidi. Not far from Vidareidi stand the impressive sea cliffs of the Enniberg headland, at 750m high they are the highest sea cliffs in Europe.
We walked to the edge of the Enniberg cliffs from our hotel accompanied all the way by a sheepdog .. don't ask me why, perhaps it was his job to safely guide tourists to the top! |

| | Ascending the Enniberg Cliffs Although it was far from being a hot or even warm day (lets face it, it wasn't even tepid .. 10 degrees C at the most) we were soon sweating as we made our way up towards the cliff edge. Several Whimbrels and Oystercatchers made their presence known and Arctic Skuas flew ominously close, I think they were more concerned with the dog than us humans though. |
Fulmars I hadn't expected to see any of the birdlife close up so I was surprised to get close enough to take this photo of a Fulmar on it's nest.

| | Walking from Oyndafjordur to Elduvik After just one night in Viðareiði we set out by minibus the next morning and caught the ferry from Klaksvík to Leirvík. From Leirvík another bus took us to Oyndafjørður where we began a pleasant walk to Elduvík.
The walk took us over a low pass and round the coastline with views across Funningsfjørður to Funningur the tiny hamlet where the Vikings were reputed to have first landed. |
Hut en route to Elduvik Stopping at Elduvik for lunch (I made the mistake of taking just a packet of dried apricots to eat .. boy was I ill later!) we continued onto Funningsfjordur. This leg of the journey involved a more strenuous hike over a high pass. Upon reaching the top of the pass we were hit by the tremendous force of a gale. I had difficulty standing up such was the strength of the gale.
From Funningsfjørður in a bedraggled state we boarded a minibus and were driven to our next accommodation at Gjógv.
