Acoma Pueblo's Sky City

Acoma Pueblo is about 1.5 hours west of Albuquerque on I-40. The old part of the pueblo is built on top of a mesa and is called "Sky City." It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in North America. The tours are not cheap (you must pay to take pictures too) but it is worth it. Try walking down the stone staircase after the tour. It used to be the only way to get up and down. Be careful! Use the ancient handholds; it is steep. You may want to eat and try the slot machines at the Acoma Casino afterwards.

Acoma Pueblo Architecture

There is no electricity but it is still a privilege to live in Sky City. The youngest daughter inherits the house.

Sky City Mica Window

Hey, they didn't have glass and mica does transmit light (kind of).

Gallup, New Mexico

Gallup is a small town 138 miles east of Albuquerque on I-40. It is a great place to shop for Indian jewelry. You can also stay at the historic El Rancho Hotel just as many movie stars have done in the past, while they were making movies in the area. Their pictures adorn the walls of the lobby.

Gallup Indian Artifact Shopping

Don't let the name Richardson's Pawn Shop fool you. They are one of the biggest distributors of Indian jewelry in the country. Shop here for both new and old items. You can get your rifle and saddle there.

El Morro

Go south out of Gallup on State Highway 32, then east on 53 to get to El Morro, i.e., Inscription Rock. Many famous Spanish and American explorers stopped there at the water pool at the base of the sandstone bluff. They carved names, dates and messages in the soft sandstone while they rested. It is another remote place that is not crowded and has a nice visitors center. The Zuni Pueblo, Ice Caves and part of the El Malpais lava flow are on the same loop back to I-40.
