Drive tours

$.5M anyone? Rent it perhaps
Wherever possible I choose to drive or at least pick a combination of group tour cum drive. Nothing beats the delight of discovering less travelled sites that take your breath away. Especially when the road does not permit coach driving you can bet on it that it won't be on your itinerary.

Sometimes it's not a choice since our time share resorts are usually off city limits. Anyway the best ones are so driving is the most practical (and cheapest) way to travel.

When renting a car, always get the car owner to rent it in his own name. That way his car insurance will cover him for the rental car too. If you are concerned about the excess (the portion of the claim that you have to bear upfront) don't buy the car rental company's comprehensive insurance. For example, We rented a car in Las Vegas for a week at about $35/day but their insurance cost a whopping $15/day! I took up our travel insurance back home that costs just $6/day and that cover includes the rental car claim of $411.

We saved a total of about $110 plus taxes!

I agree completely with what you say about making friends and developing trust, goodwill, and a sense of kinship with mother earth. We have way too much hatred and misery in our world.
