IGUASSU FALLS

by pjallittle - last update: Sep 1, 2002

PARQUE NACIONAL DO IGUACU

Call them what you will, IGUASSU, IGUAZU or IGUACU, in any language they are GRANDE. The map is available at any H. Stern establishment, they are Brazil's largest retail stores specializing in fine gems.

Representatives of both H. STERN and their chief competitor, AMSTERDAM SAUER board the Royal Princess in Buenos Aires. By agreeing to visit their stores, they provide a car, driver and tour guide por nada, gratuite, in all of the ports. A great side benefit. They absolutely vie for your attention and do their level best to accommodate your every desire.

Devil's Throat from the Brazil Side

Note the Throat in the upper right of this picture which is viewed from the Brazil side. It is actually quite far away from where you are seeing it.

More of the Panorama

Behind all of the pictures above is the principal panorama of the Falls. All of this resulted from an earthquake eons ago when the Riverbed split, with a large drop being created, thus the falls.

If you enlarge this picture, you will want to look closely at the top of the falls, where the sky meets the water. Those are people walking along, believe it or not. That is why you must go to the Argentine side. There are two walkways, one lower and one upper, very nicely laid out.

Actually, you can spend a half day just doing this, then come back early the following day after arranging all of the tours available at the office near the trail, not the main building.

smaller picture, wider panorama

Sorry this picture is not larger but it gets more into the lens. The Falls is so large that it is difficult to get more than half of the width in any one frame.

In fact, the falls even create their own weather system. This is, without a doubt, of Nature's most spectacular sites.

Hope you will all go to Brazil some day to see this.

Up Close

Seen from an observation post on the Brazil side.

Duplicate of Above but maybe larger

This may or may not be a larger picture so you can see the people walking along the top of the falls.

Falls from the Brazil Side

Take a bus into the Park, go all the way past the Tropical Hotel to the end. You will find that there is a paved walkway. This is the first part of the falls that you will see. All along the walkway you will encounter little animals that look like raccoons. Be careful not to have any food for they will swarm all over you.

This is a cool and pleasant walk and ends right across the street from the Hotel where you may wish to see the little zoo behind it or stay for coffee. You can stay at a perfectly nice hotel outside of the park for 3 days compared to the cost of one day at this hotel and be more well located for travelling around.

Don't forget to enlarge the picture and move it up and to the side.

COATI'S BEGGING FOR FOOD

These raccoon family animals have become dependent upon tourist for treats. They are extremely aggressive and will follow you along the trail, you won't see them.

They have long snouts and their tails have the same ringed pattern as their No. American cousins. Proportionately, they are thinner and, in the case of these little guys, not the least bit afraid of humans.

The following picture has been altered with PHOTOSHOP to give you better visibility than the camera did in this heavily shadowed area.

Though the picture is a tad washed out, concentrate on how much more visible the animals are in this example.
EXPAND the picture for even better detail.

More of the Falls

There are countless falls other than the primary falls. This one may also be seen from the Brazil side.

Seen from the Argentine Side

Just one section of the falls which we rode out to in a boat from the Argentine side, our favorite. You must take a bus from Brazil then spend a day or two. Take the Adventures Safari, do it all. There are walkways here which allow you to walk on ramps above the falls, looking straight down into the falls as they cascade over their cliffs.

This picture gives you an idea of the volume of water.
Try to imagine being in a rubber raft underneath this water. You must bring a complete set of dry clothes when taking these boats, you will be thoroughly drenched. They will hold your clothes in the tour office. That means shoes as well.

Devil's Throat

Accessible by boat from the Argentine side, this takes you to what remains of a ramp that allows you to overlook the Throat of El Diablo, a deep hole in the center of the river with a Falls all in one. Remarkable.

The left side of the picture is the Argentine side. On the right, the pink buildings are the grounds of the Tropical Hotel. Off to the right is the road spoken of earlier. There is a small open refreshment stand where the bus ends and the walkway begins. Have a guarana for me.
