Well these are pre-WWII aircraft, but nevertheless old and impressive. This is a very nice collection of Tigermoths.
Mark Hanna made his life a mission to bring these marvellous machines to the world. Sadly he was killed in 1999 flying a Hispano buchon, the Spanish-built version of the German Messerschmitt Bf109.
Mark bought this same aircraft to NZ in 1992 and I was privileged to see him fly it. The dogfight was stunning.
He was Managing Director and co-founder of the "Old Flying Machine Company" (UK) which restored old aircraft, usually to flying condition. He had been an RAF jet pilot but also specialised in flying these old wartime planes. His father is also a pilot and happens to be a kiwi!!
Well this isn't a Warbird, but it's always exciting to see a Boeing do a low pass with wheels up and all! This is one of the small commuter jets, the 737. The pilot was very excited at the opportunity to do this display as they don't do these manoevres very often.
This lovely old Foxmoth is really interesting. The pilot sits out in an open cockpit but the passengers are down between the wings, in a nice comfy cabin. This has been lovingly restored at a reknown workshop in a small town called Croydon in the Sth Island. This aircraft is reputed to have flown royalty around.
OK, we'll let the Americans out to play as well. And they have a very nice airplane in the P51 Mustang!! Now that is also a very fast machine and a joy to watch in the sky.
The majestic DC3, one of my alltime favourite airplanes, leads the fast boys on a slow pass, to see how good they are at keeping their speed down, hahaha. But a truly gorgeous sight!
OK they shed the Dakota and let the Corsair in for some more flyby fun to give the crowd (and me!!) one more thrill. I loved it.
When the Messerschmit and one of the Spitfires had a dogfight, one was shotdown and disappeared into a ravine. We saw an explosion and were convinced. But of course the airplane flew along the ravine and reappeared far off to the left only to come back from the dead and land in front of us all, to a sigh of relief! Very well done and very convincing!!

Great pages. I like aircraft much more than cars!
spectacular landscape- i can see why peter jackson chose this part of the world! great travelogues on the aircraft as well:)
Brings back memories. I saw some of Warbirds when the Russian planes were there and went on a flight in a stunt plane. Sad about the death.
WOW. How I would love to be there this weekend. I've flown in many Lincolns and that Merlin X4 sound is Spine-tingling; even one Mustang or Spitty would do it !. Go Wanaka.
Excellent coverage of the airshow
Thanks Pam for your encouraging comment on my Wanaka page. I refresh and add more skiing tips. I will try to go again there during the airshow thanks for the useful info ;-)
Hi Pam, Great Spitfire pages. for another Spitfire in flight (with a P51) see my Warner Robins page. Click on it to enlarge it. Saw one in your Auckland War Memorial Museum, too. Cheers! Doug d(^_^)b
I loved your Spitfire photographs, what beautiful aircraft they are. The noise of the Merlin send shivers down my spine, especially hearing a 4 engined Lancaster bomber. I think i need to visit Wanaka Peter
Your photo bobbed up when I logged on today - Ilove NZ so checked you out -magic stuff! Love your warbirds - we are regulars in Wanaka for this great event, booking for the next one as we leave each time. Roll on 2006! leyle
Your pages for NZ are amazing. Good on you, Pam! I used to live near the airfield at Wigram in Christchurch - first time I`d thought of it in years. Really liked your pages.
