The Jeddah Corniche is the coast along the Red Sea. It has 3 parts of manmade terraces, and stretches more than 20 miles. It has private beaches, restaurants, playgrounds, amusement parks and picnic sites all the way along it. There are sculptures located on parts of it as well. |
After the Mahgreb (sunset) prayer, the Corniche springs into life, with Saudi families dining al fresco. |
HRH King Fahd bin Abdulaziz donated this fountain to the city of Jeddah. It is said to be the tallest fountain in the world, exceeding even Geneva's famous jet d'eau by several metres. It is only turned on when the King is residing at Al-Salam Palace, situated just across the water. When floodlit by night, the fountain is visible for miles around. |
Amusement parks have blossomed along the northern sections of the Corniche. Built in two sections strictly segregated by gender, these contain all the traditional rides and thrills, as well as a good selection of gastronomic fairground essentials. |
Vendors with handcarts roam the beach, selling candy floss, fizzy drinks and spicy chickpeas. |
Picnicking is a favourite local hobby, and is regarded as an ideal opportunity to get together for a family chat and a substantial supper. |
Known as the White Mosque or the Floating Mosque. Sometimes when isha (late evening prayer) starts on a Friday we go and sit on the beach beside the mosque to listen. |

RickinDutch Thu Apr 5, 2007 20:53 UTC Great tips. Have only been to the airport during Haj a long time ago. Birthday greetings from Alaska! | JessH Tue Feb 6, 2007 05:43 UTC Hello dear "neighbour" :-) Lovely tips here and very good insightful information. I enjoyed your page & my ratings are with you. Greetings from Dubai / Jess | freddie18 Mon Oct 9, 2006 13:27 UTC Hi Bec. Your Jiddah page is amazing and begin to miss the place while reviewing your tips. My stay there was too short and didn't see much. Will be back to your site to see more on the Middle East. Regards from Freddie of Toronto | uglyscot Wed Apr 5, 2006 07:29 UTC Very useful tips. I wasn't there long enough to see much. Indeed the roundabouts are strange. It seems to be a feature of most Arab cities, but none so strange as in Jiddah. |
