"El Rastro (fleamarket on sundays)" Top 5 Page for this destination Madrid Travelogue by SirRichard
Madrid Travel Guide: 6,307 reviews and 9,984 photos
El Rastro is a fleamarket of Madrid running mostly in sunday mornings, from 9 to 15 aprox.
To get here you can take the metro till the station:
- La Latina or Anton Martin if you are goint to the north part.
- Puerta de Toledo if you are going to the south part.
Though there is a bit of everything everywhere, there are some certain areas where you are most likely to find certain items (look the map).
It is said that in the Rastro you won't always find what you were looking for, but you will always find something you weren't looking for...
So, just wander around with no fix direction, look, touch, ask.... and ALWAYS BARGAIN!!
This street is the main one in El Rastro, the center of it. It is also the most crowded, so beware of pickpockets!
Here you will find hippies stands, T-Shirts, souvenirs, posters...
At the west side there are many old furniture stands and shops. Some of the shops are open in weekdays too. I bought here a table and 2 other pieces of furniture, for 1/3 their real price. But bring cash, plastic money is not widely accepted.
At "Campillo del Mundo Nuevo" square (near Ronda de Toledo) you will find many used books, records, coins, stamps...
Most are in spanish, but... who knows?
At "General vara del Rey" square you can find gipsy stands selling clothes (used and new) and shoes.
At Fray Ceferino street you can find art reproductins, some originals and many many posters.
The best way to finish a visit to El Rastro is to have some tapas and beers in one of the many bars around. At Toledo street, 58 there is "La Paloma", one of the classicals...
But go soon, it gets really crowded!!
