Next Stop.... Dominica

by Weny - last update: Aug 23, 2006

Funky Downtown Portsmouth

NO NOT the Dominican Republic

Domnica. I should be heading there at end of July. 365 rivers, the largest boiling lake this side of New Zealand and waterfalls, many, many.
Not to mention great hiking and not too bad beaches. I am sold! I will definitely share my photos! I can't wait!
This is a map of the island

My return from paradise... Well, almost.

Well, I returned last night from Dominica (pronounced Dom-uh-nee-ka) and it was very beautiful. Although it was not easy to get around or find all the sites, but more on that later. I will have pictures up soon. One of the first photos will be of the twin waterfalls!

Well, I haven't exactly gotten the pictures up here yet. So, I've decided that while the pictures are being developed that I would put up a map of the island that shows where many of Dominica's sites are.

Finally Photos

it's taken me a while but I am finally gettting some of my Dominica pictures up! Here is a nice view off the road up to Syndicate trail in the Northern Forest Reserve.
a nice view

Another Picture

A nice view from the southern part of the island. Dominica is not a "beach" island. The prettiest beaches lie on the southern part of the island. The nicest one we went to was Champange. It was called that because of the tiny bubbles that fizz up from the sulfur springs under the ocean floor and you feel like you are swimming in a glass of bubbly!
Trafalgar Falls

Waterfall

Dominica has 365 rivers and countless waterfalls. It is very lush and green. A wonderful place to hike and take long walks. This was in the Central Forest Reserve.
The other fall of Trafalgar Falls
Trafalgar Falls is really two falls and they form a series of pools which are great for taking a nice brisk refreshing dip. It 's about a two minute hike through beautiful rainforest to get here.
Not Jurassic park but Dominica

The Devil's Mountain

I took this picture on Mount Diablotin or Devil's Mountain. This was at the beginning of a very HARD hike, so hard we never made it to the top. The tree roots, mud, rocks and general steepness made it a rough hike. According to one guide book about Dominica only a handful of explorers have made it to the top (much of Dominica is unmapped and unpaved because of its rugid terrain). One year a tourist died on the way up. It is a very treacherous hike! If your good you can do it in 8 hours. PHEW!
fog shrouded elfin forest

Hiking in the Elfin forest.

This is sample of the rough going we faced on the Mount Diablotin hike. Another tough hike was the Boiling Lake. A 9 hour hike that takes you a large boiling volcanic lake. The largest one this side of New Zealand. We, however did not do this hike because we already got out butts kicked on the aforementioned hike!
