international festival of the sea

by ndahl - last update: Jun 20, 2003

Norwegian square riggers

The festival took place in the port of leith, once a town in its` own right but now a part of edinburgh.

These fine ship are the Sorlandet on the left and Christian radich on the right.
Both have many years of sailing between them

coracles

The poor mans` water transportation in days gone bye was this flimsy craft, traditionally built with wood and skins it was paddled with one oar and was even used for fishing.
In some parts of the U.K. similarly constructed craft are still used although in more substantial and conventional boats

coracles

these are a few of the traditional craft still being built, although I think that may be just for exhibition purposes

square rigger

This magnificant ship is the polish Dar Mlodziezy.
I was unfortunately too short of time to learn the history of this beautiful ship

viking long boat?

These are NOT a viking long boats although they do owe their style of construction to the vikings.
these are instead, replicas of Orkney built craft.
Shetlanders also build these craft but they burn them every year in a festival called "up helly aa" where locals dress as vikings, have a good time drinking etc, then set fire to them

sand sculpture

speaks for itself does this one.
Background is the recently completed ocean terminal and a sample of the many upmarket flats being built in the dock area
Isn`t this a wonderful sight?
I`ve been privileged to have seen numerous gatherings of these fine ships throughout my life and I can never tire of them.
Maybe I was born at the wrong time.
This a boat from Eyemouth, a fishing town in the south east of scotland
