Distinguished Writers | Principito by Karin Momberg, Chile. |
Besides wine, Pinochet and the Andes, Chile is well known because of it's great writers, some of them Nobel Prizes :o)

| | PABLO NERUDA (1904 - 1973) Nobel Prize. His real name was Neftali Reyes.
"Love Sonnet XI" I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair. Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets. Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps.
I hunger for your sleek laugh, your hands the color of a savage harvest, hunger for the pale stones of your fingernails, I want to eat your skin like a whole almond.
I want to eat the sunbeam flaring in your lovely body, the sovereign nose of your arrogant face, I want to eat the fleeting shade of your lashes,
and I pace around hungry, sniffing the twilight, hunting for you, for your hot heart, like a puma in the barrens of Quitratue.
I love this poem! :o) *Photo: taken from www.google.com* |
GABRIELA MISTRAL (1889 - 1957) Nobel Prize. Her real name was Lucila Godoy.
"Children Little Feet" A child's tiny feet, Blue, blue with cold, How can they see and not protect you? Oh, my God! Tiny wounded feet, Bruised all over by pebbles, Abused by snow and soil!
Man, being blind, ignores that where you step, you leave A blossom of bright light, that where you have placed your bleeding little soles a redolent tuberose grows.
Since, however, you walk through the streets so straight, you are courageous, without fault.
Child's tiny feet, Two suffering little gems, How can the people pass, unseeing.

| | ISABEL ALLENDE (1942) She has written 7 books so far: 1. La Casa de los Espiritus (1982) 2. De Amor y de Sombra (1984) 3. Eva Luna (1987) 4. Los Cuentos de Eva Luna (1988) 5. El Plan Infinito (1991) 6. Paula (1994) 7. Afrodita (1998) 8. Hija de la Fortuna (1999)
I have read all her books and I love her writing style. All of these books have been translated in different languages, so I'm sure that you can find them quite easily.
At the present she's living in California, USA.

MARCELA PAZ (1902 - 1985) Literature Nacional Prize (1982). Her real name was Ester Huneeus. "Papelucho" is the most important and famous book she wrote for children. The first "Papelucho" (because there is a serie of books) was written in 1947). There are 12 "Papelucho" in total. I remember to have read them all when I was in School.... and children from nowadays still read them!!!!!!!. I'll keep mines for my children in the future. There are editions in English too ;o)
