My first 6 years on a Farm in Wasdale, Cumberland

by into-thin-air - last update: Jul 17, 2003

My First overland Trip !!!

My First Trip !!!
This photo is of my Very First overland trip !!! Wastwater !!! -- Note the Sturdy construction of the Vehicle, well sprung for the rigours of the road !! and my Mother must have had a Lot of Faith in the efficiency of the hand-brake !!!!
By the Lake !!

On the same trip !!

This photo was probably taken around the same time on the farm that I was born on in Wasdale, " Easthwaite Farm " where our land went right down to the shores of Wastwater ( the deepest lake in England !! )

Off to Work !!!

Here I am off to work on the Tractor with my Dad !!!
Me and my Dad
Having our " Bait "

Hay Time !!

Here we all are in the Hay Field at Bait Time !!! Those were the days !!

The first Trek !!

Do you ever think certain things are Pre-Ordained ?? --- Here I am of on my very first " Trek " !!!
Ga'an T't Fell
An Early MG ???

Boy-Racer !!

OK we know that ALL young lads are Boy-Racer's at Heart !! --- But how many years on and I haven't changed a bit !!??

Harvest Time !!

From left to right on this shot is Trevor, ( our Farm Lad) Myself, Dad and then my cousin Una. The strange looking contraption behind the tractor is a " Binder " this was an implement that pre-dated the combine-harvester, What used to happen was the Binder cut and tied the corn ( or barley etc.etc. ) into Sheaves and then these sheaves were transported back to the farmyard where a Thresher would come and Thresh the sheaves and you would then be left with the corn in one pile ( put into bags ) and he straw in another pile ready for either bailing or to be stored loose in a barn or corn-stack !! Those were the days !! Hard work but nobody seemed to mind that back then !!!!
Harvest Time
With four of my Cousins !!

Coming Home !!

My Father was killed on a Tractor accident in 1962 when I was only six years old, this is one of the last photo's of me on the Farm, Here I am Leading the Expedition back home !!
