A hike in Topes de Collantes

Topes de Collantes, Trinidad
Today, the 8 May, we are having a short hike on our program. Around 9h00 we are picked up and brought to the national park "Topes de Collantes" were we do a hilly walk to a waterfall. The nature is very beautiful and our guide Delbis, gives plenty of explanation about the birds and the trees on the track. It's a tiring walk and soon the sweat is dripping from our faces. Delbis shows us some liana, but he's warning us for the thorns on it. Now I can understand why Tarzan is making that yell when he swings through the jungle: "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaai". He has such a thorn in his hands.
This trip brings us to a high waterfall, which drops his water in a deep gorge, producing some rapids. It took us about 1,5 hour to get here and now we enjoy the view. Delbis asks if some of us are interested to walk towards the top, I decide to go together with Marinette, Wim and Nele. We reach a small ridge, a few meters below the top of the waterfall. We see the water plunge into the deep. We enjoy the view and we see lots of swallows drink the water from the falls will they are floating. A few smaller swallows moisturise their beak with the water rests in the cracks in the rocks, but a few daredevils get the water by diving into the falling water.

After some relaxing time, we go back down to join the rest of the group who are waiting for us. We change into our swimsuits and take a refreshing dive into the water. Although the water is coming from the mountains, it is not as cold as expected. The water is crystal-clear and refreshing, we feel the tiredness flow out of our body. Behind a big rock, John is splashing around naked, out of sight of the rest from the group. As we see some people coming in the distance, he's asking for his towel so that he can be more representative.
We are sitting a bit in the rapid and we feel the force from the water pushing against us. As we feel enough refreshed, we start to get ready for the trip back. Because Wim and Nele forgot their water in the bus, we are threatened with a water shortage, but according the guide is this water perfect drinkable and it can be used to refill our water supply. It tastes much better then the purified water that you can buy in the shops. I think I drunk at the spot at least 1,5 litre water before I fill my bottle for the last time.

We meet a Dutch couple they came together with a German-Dutch couple to this place. Like so many they met each other in Cuba and they travel then together to different areas. We start our trip back, but it will take us longer, because we are going more uphill now then before. It's a hard trip now ant the refreshment from a few minutes is now noticeable as sweat drops on our faces. It's now very important to drink on regular times en don't step to fast so that everybody can keep up. We have seen lots of things today and had a lovely day. After refreshment in the bar, we go back to Trinidad where we arrive around 16h00.
