This travelogue is a photo journal of some places i've been in Ireland outside of Dublin, a place for a few favourite photos aside from the ones in my Ireland tips. This photo was taken just outside the old weaving woolen mill in the village of Avoca, also famous as the filming location for Ballykissangel

Barryscourt Castle, Cork

Most of Ireland's castles are tall square towers that look very different from the elaborate turrets and fortified compounds in England and Scotland. This one is Barryscourt Castle, county Cork.

The Burren is rather barren, with hills of slate and rock and corkscrew shaped narrow roads navigating the hills and valleys above Galway Bay.

Ennis on the River Fergus.

The town of Ennis is near Shannon and a very pretty place with the River Fergus winding through. There are nice shops and lots of places to eat and if you are staying near Shannon, this is a nicer place to stay. Bunratty Castle and the folk park isn't far and they hold medieval banquets there as well.

Approaching Galway Bay

Galway Bay is on the west coast of Ireland. The city of Galway is vibrant, young and a great place to visit. You may even enjoy it more than busy crowded Dublin. The area surrounding Galway bay is hilly and barren.

A Galway Hooker

A Galway Hooker is an old fishing boat that are not usually found or used these days other than for festivals or displays. THe name may derive from the Dutch Hoeker, referring to hooks and lines or it may come from "howker" and "holker" which have to do with small boats.
