Wandering the back streets of this lovely town is a delight. Variations in architecture, unexpected piazzas, narrow alleyways plus all the usual churches. Then it has a castle and aqueduct to add to your delight. |
| | Love that castle Yes, another shot of one of my all time favourites, the castle at San Leo. |
Timeless architecture I first saw this type of thing in Prague and later in Germany. This wall clock in Spoleto also intrigued me.
| | Perugia Fontana Maggiore, the centrepiece of the Piazza IV Novembre, created by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano in the 13th century. |
The river near Grotte d' Frasassi
| | The walls of Urbino Classic lines of an Italian hilltop town where the buildings overlook the mediaeval fortifications. |
Another road, another ruin It doesn't seem to matter where you drive in Italy, somewhere you look there will be an evocative ruin of indeterminate age that you wished you had time to go and have a look at. This one is in Le Marche, en route to San Leo.
| | Bassano Inferiore Somewhere just north of Spoleto and south of Lago Trasimeno lies a nondescript village called Bassano Inferiore. It has the evocative outlines of castle walls from times past. In the late afternoon, just before evening fell, the last rays picked it out and beckoned me come thither. So it was I found myself up a country lane with camera in hand, taking a picture of the chiesa with the old castle in the background. Subsequent enquiries led to nowhere, not even "Google" could help. The fading past has faded, oblivion beckons. |

Oh well, I have found many sights to see for my next trip and also inspirations for future ones :-)) Thanks for inspiring me - I need a lifetime to see this all. But Rome, Napoli and Trentino are now on my list as well :-) | Nemorino Sun Mar 2, 2008 17:14 UTC Me again, returning to read more of your fine tips on Italy. I've seen operas based on Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso", but never such a weird garden of sculptures. That paper museum in Amalfi sounds fascinating, but I'm glad I never had to work there. | Jeffandnorah Sun Jan 6, 2008 23:44 UTC I just found this little piece of paper with your name on it that you gave to me while riding with you on our way from Positano to Pompei almost 5 years ago. I believe it was on the bus ride. Glad to have finally found you. |
