This was BagEnd and the hobbit houses, however the façades have been removed by the film company, unfortunately.
The tour takes you from the town of Matamata to the farm where the movie set was. Here you drive to the inner, secluded area that was transformed into Hobbiton, and very knowledgeable tour guides can answer all your questions on where the movie was filmed here.
If you have seen the Lord of the Rings movie, "The Fellowship of the Ring", you will recognise this huge tree, around which the party took place at Hobbiton.
Our guide explains the set out of the service area for the movie crew. Pictures on the board show how it was during filming. Actors caravans, camera/satellite trucks and food/mess tent were in this area as well as other facilities.
This is the overall area showing the large old pine 'Party Tree' and the lake around which the set was based. The Hobbit village is where I am standing to take the photo.
Here you can see what is left of the Hobbit village, the houses in the side of the hill. All that is left is the basic structures, as the facades were made from polystyrene and removed immediately after filming was completed.
Here is Bagshot Row, now with sheep as residents, and back to it's original farming life.

Nice page . The warm spring, skydiving and the waterfall are very interesting for me. Thanks for sharing. JP
Top page! (oh yes i have seen all this already but it didn't quite seem possible - now it does)
Matamata is my dream home! Wouldn't everybody love to live in the Shire? Hobbiton seems almost real. I always hoped they would build some kind of a theme park somewhere, but for some reason they didn't... ?
Please do not leave valuables in cars at the carpark near the track to the falls it is a well known place to have for cars to be broken into. Please be aware. It is a lovely walk ,please enjoy it!

I'm with you on the vege fritters! We recently visited from the UK and ate here twice. The second time was lunch after a VERY wet walk to the beautiful Wairere Falls. The Vege fritters tasted sooo good! Brilliant place.

Did you see the weather sketch? Not a bad day for that green bit up the top. And that other green bit further down, not a bad day either Trev.
Sounds like fun - million times better than crewing! Well, he emigrated from Christchurch in 1966, but I know he's flown in the South Island since. Unfortunately don't know the details.
