Everybody seems to be carrying a digital camera when travelling, right ?
If you answer 'yes', please read on.
First, my own experience :
I bought a digital camera & went travelling around London, Iceland & Paris in 2004.
I did the photo downloading at people's places of whom these people I was in touch with, prior to my visits to their countries...
I didn't have any problem in downloading my digital photos because all the times, either I did the downloading myself to a CD-R or they did it for me as they were wise enough to deal with my memory card.
I took back 5 CD-Rs, all filled with my digital photos taken around those places ! So proud of them !
In 2005, I went travelling in The Middle East. That's when the problem started !
No problem in Lebanon; No problem either in Syria.
It all started in Amman, Jordan !
I went to a photo shop there & asking whether they could download my digital photos into a CD-R; This is a normal question.
The guy said yes...
NOW, there are 2 ways for the procedures :
1. If you bring your own cable, the photo shop would just attach it to your digital camera & connecting it to a PC, insert a CD-R in the PC, click on...& the downloading begins.
2. If you don't bring your own cable, the shop would have a small gadget where they insert your memory card in it, connecting the gadget to their PC, insert a CD-R...& the downloading begins.
So, I brought my own cable because in a way, I don't like the way they toss my memory card into that gadget, so I follow the first procedure above.
Okay, back to Amman...
After waiting for about 15 minutes, there's nothing in the CD-R !
The guy at the shop tried again, still there's something penetrating the downloading...I didn't know what, the guy couldn't figure out either !
I had to wait nearly 2 hours (I even missed my bus to Madaba), whatever the guy did, I managed to have my photos into the CD-R BUT all the photos were double up ! Instead of having 1 photo, I had 2 copies of the same photos in the CD-R !
That never happened to me & the guy said at least my photos were safe in the CD-R. He's right !
I collected back my digital camera & erased all the photos from my memory card. So that I could take new photos !
So, off I went to Madaba Dead Sea, Mt. Nebo, Karak, Ma'an & Petra. After taking lots of photos, nearly 100 over in these places...I went to a photo shop in Petra & wanted my photos to be downloaded into a CD-R.
What had happened to me in Amman, repeated again in Petra !
This time, it was worst ! ALL my digital photos from Amman to Petra (including photos in Madaba, Dead Sea, Mt. Nebo, Karak, Ma'an) were all GONE ! LOST forever !
It was a grim time for me !
I was shocked ! Even the photo shop in Petra was shocked !
They couldn't figure out what the problem was...It had never happened to them before. |
The guy at the photo shop started to inspect my memory card.
Although I didn't like it but I also wanted to know what the problem was.
He said that there's a system file existed in my memory card. They couldn't erase this file.
It was this file which could have blocking the downloading in Amman. This system file also taken too much space in my memory card & controlling the downloading.
BEFORE they tried to delete the system file, they asked my permission to do this.
I said 'YES' !
So, when the system file was being deleted, that caused all the photos in the memory card to be erased as well !
BUT the system file was still there ! Although all the photos were gone !
We agreed that the system file could be 'created' by one of the photo shops in Lebanon or Syria or that photo shop in Amman.
I was angry, I was disappointed; They could see this. They didn't charge me although I took their times in figuring out what exactly happened. I thanked them.
Back to my hotel in Petra, I was scractching my head !
I only had ONE memory card & I still needed it for places around Egypt !
Now that all my photos around Petra were lost, I certainly didn't want that to happen for more places around Egypt !
Even on that evening in Petra, I would have Petra Night Excursion ! I wanted to cancell it because I didn't want to go simply because I couldn't take the night photos !
I figured out one way :I REFORMATTED MY MEMORY CARD !The system file was gone ! I could claim back my memory space & off I went to Petra Night Excursion & took some night photos, which you can see on HERE...
So, I continued my journey...to Egypt. After taking enough photos, I went to photo shops & had my photos downloaded into CD-Rs & then reformatted my memory card.
So, my advise is :
1. REFORMAT your memory card after you save the photos to your PC or into a CD-R ! Don't just erase/delete the photos because there would be some 'alien' files still taking some space in your memory stick/card.
2. When you download photos at photo shops, remind them to delete the photos from their PC.
Some shops would use your beautiful photos as their own !
3. Carry more than ONE memory card/stick; If one is having problem, you would have another one for taking photos.
4. Not ALL photo shops know what they are doing when dealing with digital cameras. You don't know what 'virus files' they might inject into your memory card hence blocking future downloadings from the card.
So, reformat the card is the best way !
Errr, what do you mean HOW to reformat your card ? You MUST reformat the card BEFORE you could use it, just after you bought the card or the camera...

Again, distorted loud guitar & Carol van Dyk sings her lullabies about a guy who didn't turn up at the bus stop; The Palomine album I love most because the songs are RAW...but their 2nd album Lamprey sounds raw BUT POLISHED ! I hate that....Anyway, check what the press & the band have got to say about their music on their Official Site...
PIXIESPIXIES, I simply adore them ! Before I could discover anything else in music, I had heard so much about them ! sadly, NONE of their releases were available in Malaysia....I had to write to ELEKTRA RECORDS in the US & 4AD RECORDS in UK to let them know that PIXIES had a fan in Malaysia ! Elektra Records sent me a tape of BOSSANOVA & this was the start of my fascinations with PIXIES ! Get to know them better on HERE...; You can also find many BOOTLEGs by Pixies collected by the fans from the world over !...

BOO RADLEYS (AUDIO SAMPLES)A 'shoegazing' band...a classic! I survived my lonely period listening to this album !
The photo shows their first official album although they released a RARE record called Ichabod & I prior...
If you want to start discovering this band, get their EPs compilation called Learning To Walk...
Damn ! Why am I telling you guys this ? Their early records (FIRST 3...) are mega rare now except their latter albums (The last 3...).
Anyhow, maybe you get to know them better if you could see their record covers on

CREATION RECORDSAlso, do check Creation Records (another site; yet another good Discography Site where you can also get to know Primal Scream, Slowdive, Ride, Boo Radleys, Oasis (I'm not keen...), Teenage Fanclub etc etc etc;) 'Cos they were as DIY as most people wanted to think & they had great persona as bands & albums released in the 80's & 90's are concerned...

ROCKETGIRL RECORDSROCKETGIRL RECORDS belongs to a girl from London with whom I was in touch through snail mail long long time ago....Her label is cool, nothing that you in general would be interested in anyway, so the best is just to pay her label a visit through the Internet !...Although I should add that I OWE some of my best CD collections from her advice !...

MERCURY REV (AUDIO SAMPLES)This is such a glorious album ! It grabs the American music from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day !...This album sounds just THAT !
Normally, I'm not that keen in discovering ANY American bands because everybody wants to be the next DEAD NIRVANA...but then I always knew there were/are bands who think/thought that Kurt Cobain would be better off committing suicide anyway...So, Mercury Rev came to my attention when so many British Press made this album one of the best albums from the last century !...
Anyhow, you can discover about them on their Site...
